Considering Eyefinity

Hello

I'm currently the owner of 2 Eizo FS2331, and am strongly considering getting the third so i can try out a eyefinity configuration. But before i do so i have a few questions about it.

Is eyefinity something that is enabled the whole time, or can i do so that only some games activate it while others only make use of a single screen? If not, is it a hell turning it off and on?

Any negative sides about running eyefinity?

Last: Is it recommendable? :D

no u can switch or disable or group any monitor you want from display setting..
very easy... very very heavenly easy, i own two u2711 before and recently add another two + plasma 54", so total im using 5 monitors.. as of today... WOHOHOHOOOHOHO....

extremely recommended.. and i dont even do games..

Okay thanks :)

I've seen screenshots where the processline is crossed through all monitors, is there a way to make the middle monitor the "Main", meaning the important stuff still goes on there?

You can easily switch from one big monitor simulation to the regular extended desktop in windows.

basically you can do whatever you want with the monitor setup... set any to be off, to be group, to be on, to be on top, on bottom, 69.... etc..

trust me, it is very easy to do it..

the hell part would be whether you graphic card is strong/able enough to drive triple monitor..
my vga card HD6970cx is running 4 monitors with displayport, 1 plasma with HDMI.. so im all set...

I am an eyefinity user, and cannot go back.... but its not all roses. Like mentioned before you need to make sure you have the hardware. Second a lot of games are supported from the begining but then there are also a lot that are not. Fixes and tweaks usually come out which is always good, but it can take a little effort. Third side monitors can have a fisheye effect, but you are really meant to focus on centered monitor and use side monitors (immersion) for your peripheral vision. But when everything falls into place its absolutely AMAZING!!!! I will not buy a game if its not EYEFINITY CAPABLE, and if I do it has to be a triple AAA title. Last game I bought that was not capable was mass effect 2, but I really cannot see myself purchasing another one. I went from 30 lcd to 3 24's and loving every minute of it. Just recognize the pros and cons and it will help you out when things dont exactly go your way.

Thanks for the reply all :) I decided to take the plunge and have ordered the display, and hoping it'll arrive today. I do belive that my graphic card solution is powerful enough to make it (6950CF).

Just a last question, is it still required to have an active displayport adapter if i don't have a native displayport monitor? or can it be run with 2x dvi 1 hdmi?

As of 4/1/2011 it's not something I would ever recommend to someone not a hardcore enthusiast than can moonlight as a computer tech. It's not for someone who just wants things to work.

  • Switch monitors physically from portrait to landscape because certain games, AC: Brotherhood, won't work in both directions. Getting the screens physically lined up just perfect is not easy. Hope you have a sturdy, level, and wide table.

  • Windows desktop and non-game activities require custom setup of ATI Hydravision so screens end up as they should.

  • Landscape appears to be supported most often in games but for normal desktop usage it's really too wide. My 3x Dell U2311 and my 24" Benq are 90" Wide. 7.5 feet of monitor a few feet away is WIDE! It's 66" with just the triple.

  • Disabling and enabling eyefinity/grouping is not just a quick change if you use bezel compensation. Probably done this 5-10 times over the last month and each time it's a little different.

  • Some games will require a third party widescreen fixer and additional tweaking to look good. Some will require editing of ini files. COD, Battlefield, Fallout 3, New Vegas all require tweaking or apps.

  • You had better have some $$$ for video cards and decent cooling in your case. 1GB of video memory per card is not enough. Multi-monitor setups make for higher video card temps as it's always working harder. Room temps will also go up.

For the last several weeks I've debated calling it quits but when you get in game it's hard not to enjoy. So far F1 2010, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2010, and Civ V are the only ones to work out of the box.

I don't mind configuring stuff a bit, i like tweaking stuff actually.

Much of my time spend on the computer is done composing music, in that context im 100% sure that the extra screen estate will be very beneficial.

As far as graphic solution goes, i have a well cooled chassis and crossfired 6950 so i think i am pretty set as far as that goes. Also i do have a VERY wide and study table, its rock solid :)

But as asked previously, is it required to have atleast one screen connected with display port or can i do 2x DVI and 1x HDMI?

No you can not. Only two non-display port cables can be active at one time. You may have 2x DVI and 1xHDMI but only two of them can be working at the same time if running Eyefinity. Even with Crossfire only a single monitors connectors are active with Eyefinity. My understanding is that if you break the grouping and crossfire then you could run up to 8 displays or 4 per video card.

There are some display port "switches" I've heard of but can't comment on that.

Just a last question, is it still required to have an active displayport adapter if i don't have a native displayport monitor? or can it be run with 2x dvi 1 hdmi?

lets see... 6950 cf means u have:

2 hdmi
2 dvi-d
2 dvi-i
4 display port...

u wanna use 3 dvi-d... o yea, u need an adaptor.. :)
(thanks for the display port monitor, even one hd 6950/6970 can drive 3 native 2560 x 1600 monitors) 1 dvd-d, 2 display port on a single card..
the hardware part is always the hell part... :D

HD6950 specs: (single card)
AMD Eyefinity multi-display technology1
Native support for up to 4 simultaneous displays
Up to 6 displays supported with DisplayPort 1.2 Multi-Stream Transport
Independent resolutions, refresh rates, color controls, and video overlays
Display grouping
Combine multiple displays to behave like a single large display

1. AMD Eyefinity technology works with games that support non-standard aspect ratios, which is required for panning across multiple displays. To enable more than two displays, additional panels with native DisplayPort™ connectors, and/or DisplayPort™ compliant active adapters to convert your monitor’s native input to your cards DisplayPort™ or Mini-DisplayPort™ connector(s), are required. SLS (“Single Large Surface”) functionality requires an identical display resolution on all configured displays.

I had the option of going Zr30w or eyefinity for gaming. I ordered two more monitors for eyefinity first. althought my graphics cards haven't arrived yet and I haven't gamed in eyefinity. I had some doubts about returning the monitors but I love the idea of having multiple screens and my monitors are 120hz and their 24" which isn't small so I'm really happy now haha
