Im thinking about getting a 9600 pro to stick into one of my computers.. either my p4 1.8 with a ti4200 or my amd2600+ with a gf2 mx200 (depending on which one I switch, the second best card will go to the other computer.)

One of my concerns is, will this card play battlefield 1942 secret weapons nicely? Or is there a better choice in this relative price range?

I assume half my battle in battlefield is the processor. I play a lot of single player and my gf4 often goes down to 12fps when im playing. not fun.

The 9600pro will play battlefield with ease and now the xt is out you can find them for as low as 130$ and you wont find a better dx9 card than that new for that price.;)

I'd suggest putting the 9600 in the 2600 machine.
For BF1942 just make sure you have plenty of RAM.

When you say plenty of ram are you refering to ram in the computer? (512 ddr one at 266 other at 333) or the ram in the video card?
does the ram in the video card really matter? I know some have faster memory, and that is definitely a good thing but is 128 a necessity?

I think he ment system RAM....if you have 512mb you should be fine. Anything higher than 128mb of ram on a video card is a waste in more ways than one. But i would recommend a 9600xt its more future proof and faster than a 9600 and 9600 pro. Its even faster than a 9500 pro
