Hi guys

i just upgraded my home machine a bit, now im running a asus m4A78-E mobo (corssfire capable, amd 790gx+sb750), 4 gb ddr2-800 and a amd x2 7750.

Now for the vid card, i am currently running a hd 2900GT (picked it up on the cheap right before they vanished), but this card is a tad slow (back in the day i had a 8800GTS 320, which smoked this card). My plan is to replace it with a 4830, mainly because its the fastest card i can get without having to start saving for it, and because my 1440*900 doesnt demand that much power anyway

So my question is, which brand do you guys suggest? the sapphire with the weird round alu-fin cooler is the cheapest here (netherlands), but i would prefer a different kind of cooler, i really dig the XFX type, but that card costs 120, and for 5 bucks more i could have a 4850...

The only no-no here is MSI, after some heinous crap with their mobo's, they are on my shit-list, and so far they arent very interesting price-wise anyway..

I had a powercolor 4830 before I got a 4870 and it worked well for the time I had it. It had a big round cooler on it that worked very well, and wasn't as ugly as the sapphire one. I'm not sure many people around here would recommend powercolor as a brand though, it was the cheapest 4830 when I bought it though.

It's often silly to sit waiting for the next round of technology, but isn't that new 40nm 4830 replacement supposed to be coming out in two weeks?

Might be worth waiting if you can end up with something faster, cooler, less power draw for under $100.

you mean the 4750/4770?

if i can find a hard release date, then i might consider waiting, but right now i wouldnt start crying if a month after my purchase it gets beaten by 10%. I dont need to have the best, or even the best bang for the buck, i just want to replace the 2900GT with something reasonable.

ill do some digwork though, if waiting two weeks can net me a significantly better deal...

i went for the powercolor..$80 with free shipping, $15 rebate @ the egg so $65 final price
and it has onboard HDMI.. best 4830 IMO
nice n quiet too

+1 Great card, I have it in my second pc and runs games quite well @ 1680x1050 not all maxed of course.

I missed the rebate but $80 delivered is pretty good. Mine OC to 760 core/940 mem so far. Very, very quiet and runs cool.

Whatever is cheapest.

The 4750/4770 will probably be marked up when they hit online shops.

I have the Sapphire one before it was replaced with the one with HDMI, it was the cheapest at my time of purchase. Runs my games well when overclocked to 750/950 @ 1920x1200.

Get whatever's cheapest, but if you can spare a few bucks and a couple weeks, the 4750/4770 might be worth looking at. Those are awfully close to the 4850 performance and draw less power too.

Wait a few weeks for the 4750 and if it doesnt seem like a good value, get the any 4830. And the Accelero S1 or 2 for a cooler along with a low speed fan would get you a perfect card.

Alright, so the 4750 might be worth waiting for, however, i dont feel like waiting too long. If i have to wait two months, then i might just as well save up and get a 4870 anyway.

Does anyone have an informed guess about when the 4750 should hit shops?

I have the first Sapphire.

I am very pleased with it. At stock I am running everything I can find at 1920x1080 with smoothness. If it's Red Alert 3 I can turn on all the bells and whistles, Crysis Warhead is at that resolution with Mainstream and looks great, Source games can be maxed out.

I'm not sure why I would need any more than this, what plateau there is besides shinier Crysis. Supreme Commander might be tough but if Crysis is good, I'm glad I didn't splurge. No heat or noise problems, though there is a big case fan that helps. Personally I wouldn't wait or pay more, though HDMI could be useful (there is an adapter with what I got). If nothing else go Crossfire without paying much, it would probably beat a 260 core 216.

And this is NOT tuned to 625/1000, which is very feasible. Then it would be like a pseudo 4850. Also at 1440x900 it would be even faster.

Recommended!
