Thinking of upgrading from my 8800GT to a 4850 X2. It seems the 4850 X2 had limited performance due to driver issues.

1. Have the drivers matured?

2. Is the 4850 X2 with 1 gig memory sufficient for today's games?

3. The 4870 1 gig is priced similar to the 4850 X2 (512 x 2). Do I consider the 4870 instead.

Thanks for the links Cowboy. Unfortunately, I didn't get any of the answers to my questions. I also did a search & came up empty.
 
Look at the OCForums review of the card. It does decently against the GTX260 and in many cases beats the GTX260 in average and max FPS though it does tend to lose in the min FPS department which @ higher resolutions. I don't think the min FPS issues can be addressed by drivers as even with the latest drivers even the HD4870 still has issues with its low min FPS.
 
with the 4890 rumored to arrive in april, the 4850x2's becomes less relevant in its place as competition for the gtx 280/285. in some of the latest titles, even 4870 512 in cf becomes inadequate at 19x12 when applying aa, so 4850x2 1gb (essentially 4850 512 cf) will be inadequate as well. the 4870 1024 is a great card but will certainly be bettered by the upcoming 4890.
 
I heard the 4890 would simply be a refresh of the 4870. From what I read, performance gains would be minimal at best. If I am mistaken, it certainly might be worth it to wait. It is hard to pass up the 4850 X2 at their current prices. What to do? What to do?
 
the 4890 certainly looks like a refresh of the 4870, but how it performs remains to be seen. looks like ati intends to battle the gtx 280/285 with a fast single gpu card of its own. with no other vendors building 4850x2 cards, it would be hard to expect ati to continue to support this product. i just ordered two x2's a few minutes ago, but i have money to throw away.
 
ATI wouldn't bother releasing a new (single GPU) card unless it could directly compete with the 280/285.

1. i own one and i havent' had problem but some people have its hit and miss
2. i wouldn't bother getting 1gig version of this because 1gig version in truth only have 512mb memory on each gpu and it will defeat purpose of having crossfire set up
3. depends on your needs if you want to crank up aa all the way and play on resolution of 1920/1200 i would recommend, if you don't really care about AA and wants to save some money go for 4870 1gig

p.s stock fans are bit loud and hope you don't mind noise or be ready to spend extra on aftermarket cooler
 
4890 would probably just overclock a lil better and be at a higher clock speed, nothing major
 
I think I've decided to go with a 4850x2 over a 4870 1GB. The only issue is they're now $340 on newegg. What's with the random price changes on all the hardware I want on newegg. :( That always happens, everything is dirt cheap till I'm ready to buy and it sky rockets back up.
 
You might try looking elsewhere, $340 is a little high compared to what the price was before.

this. also 340 (unless your in canda) is high. I think amazon has this for around 280 AR or something.
 
I did the same upgrade to a 4850X2 2GB and Its awesome. I wouldnt bother with the 480X2 1GB. the fans are much louder than the 8800GT at idle. I havent had any driver issues with 9.2. Amazon.com had them for 250 AR but they are oos atm.
 
they dropped down to 279.99 for the 2gb version over the weekend. glad i ordered when i did. mongo wins.
 
The 4850 X2 I am considering only has 1 gig of ram. Do I need to worry about that?

1. Yes - they are MUCH better than the disc drivers. The 9.1's work great for me in Vista 32 - not sure about XP.

2. I have the 2GB version for my 30" Dell monitor. It's more than enough, even at 1GB for you. What res are you playing at?

3. No. The 4850 X2 runs circles around it
 
I am using a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2060u 22" CRT monitor. It can go as high as 2048 x 1536. The default resolution is 1600x1200.
 
Alright I bit. I purchased the 4850 X2 2 gig from the Egg. It's been a long time since I went red. This should be a nice bump from my 8800GT 512.

Nice, I love mitsubishi monitors. I have the 19" version of the diamond pro.

Yeah. I've purchased LCD monitors 3 different times over the last few years. Each time I wound up returning the LCD monitors and going back to my beloved Diamond Pro.
