conroe xeon?

xeons are server processors [like amd has the opterons]

umm since its same socket, i assume itd work? ne1 wanna confirm :-P

Except that Xeon's specs are exactly the same as the ones of the E6600.
So the whole "server processor" thing doesn't really hold true in this particular case.

It would sure be interesting to hear from someone with more in-depth knowledge on what exactly the differences between those two chips are.

Doesn't it have the FB-DIMM controller? I believe that should be a difference between workstation and server applications. FB-DIMM is a ton better so may as well just get that.

LOL... I knew when they did the 3000series Xeon they were going to have this problem. Leave it to intel to adapt a confusing marketing strategy.

The 3000 series chipsets DO NOT use FBDIMMs. That is a single CPU server with the MCH built around 975 silicon. The 30xx Xeons are just rebadged Conroes.... though there is probably a different CPUID so it may not work in a desktop board.... though it should. Electronically it will work.... but it may not due to bios differences.
