so what's the xeon model that has the conroe core called these days? Is it available yet? If not, when will it be? Anyone actually have one?

Xeon 51xx (eg 5120, 5150 etc)

They have been out for longer than the Conroe has been available.

Dempsey is based on the Presler core, ie. netburst. "Conroe Xeon" is the 51xx series and is named Woodcrest. They are out and have been for a couple months. The only issue is that they require slightly more expensive FBDIMMs and the current boards are in the $500 range... with the exception of the shitty ass tyan boards, though I don't consider them in the least.

super, thanks for the replies!

anyone have any motherboard recommendations for them? I'm trying to put together a dual processor server for our website.

I would look into the Supermicro boards. So far they appear to be built very well, can accomodate full memory capacity, and feature packed. Look to be a great platform... just a bit pricey.

I got a woodcrest system from dell soon as they came out for my company, gotta say that thing rocks the house!

Also worth note: the Xeon 5100 series CPUs seem to be cheaper clock for clock than the Core 2 Duo, however, you do have to balance that against higher priced motherboard and RAM as mentioned above. On the flipside, you had the opportunity to built a dual socket system and buy the highest performance quad-core x86 system availble at the moment.

the 51xx and the core 2 duo are the same basic architecture though right? So the xeon should just have more cache?

Or the same amount of cache, sometimes a faster FSB..

But yes, 51xx = Core 2 Duo or the other way around depending on how you look at it.

All the Xeon chipsets (5000 series) are also Quad Channel, so you want to fill the memory in multiples of four to get the therotical bandwidth of 21 GB/sec with 667 FB-dimms. They also have dual front side busses. All of the woodcrests over 2 GHz run with a 1333 fsb as well.
