When is Conroe going to be released? And, what motherboards is it going to be compatiable with.

Second half of 06 and details are not all clear yet on compatability.

Conroe will be released in the 3rd quarter of this year (July-September timetable for those who don't know) and Conroe will be compatiable with the upcoming BroadWater chipset aka 965 chipset. Intel wants to release Conroe as early as possible when we reach the 3rd quater so don't be suprised if we see Conroe in July.

I was planning on building a new rig by the end of May. FX-60, 4GB RAM... Top end everything....

Is it worth it for me waiting until the end of summer for Conroe? All I will be doing is gaming with this new computer, lol.

I, just don't wanna wait for Conroe, that's all....So, should I just stifle me impatience and wait, or should I just spend the money and get everything in May?

How do you know Intel's intentions? Are you an employee?

I don't know about the 1st , but he's simple well informed.I knew that too without being an employee.

If you can stomach the fact that a 316US processor will beat your 1031US one in less 3-5 months, then sure go right ahead...

The reason why I question that is because it seems counter-intuitive to release a new product line so soon, especially on the mobile front with Merom. Yonah solutions are taking a while to penetrate the market, it seems. As for the desktop front, Intel doesn't seem to be doing too bad either. I could see a new architecture in the back-to-school season at the earliest.

Merom won't be released now.It is tied to Vista launch and scheduled for Q4 this year.Since Vista slipped into 2007 it is possible Merom will be launched late in Q4 , probably in early December ready for the Xmas buying spree.Consider that Merom is drop in compatible with current Yonah laptops.

Intel is doing very poorly in servers , 2P and 4P where Paxville ( especially in 2P ) doesn't cut it at all.
Problem is this : Dempsey with Blackford chipset were supposed to replace Paxville in jan-feb.However , memory problems with FBDIMM ( heat and availability ) delayed it to may which is incredible close to Woodcrest ( July ).Dempsey might be the shortest lived Intel platform to date.

On the desktop front , Cedar Mill and Presler are doing fine , cool , cheap but they need to shake up the perception of AMD being the leader ( good for stock ).Conroe will do just that and it will probably come in July.

FX-60 it is then =)
Sorry I was off in my timing figure if your going to buy in late May your looking at 1.5 months to 4 months.. but hey it's your money spend how you like. :p

Right up until these benchmarks were released, I was going to upgrade to a Cedar Mill or Presler setup. The Conroe benchmarks I have seen don't compare performance to these CPU's, although undoubtedly they are blown away. Any idea where they would compare in the spectrum compared to Conroe? Even as an approximate or percentage of performance?

Simple, Intel will not have enough Conroes to saturate the Market, just as AMD didn't have enough Hammers and still sold tons of AthlonXPs. The same thing Happened when AMD finally started to get enough A64's/FX and X2 first shipped.

Yonah is different since going from a Single core notebook Processor to a Dual Core one is a whole different ballgame. I agree with the other guys. If Intel weren't iching to get this thing out there, then they'd have stayed tightlipped.

Dempsey is a processor.... and really it's not bad at all. They have versions that are @95watts and great performers. Now... compared to Woodcrest it's nothing special but the big difference with Blackford/Greencreek is the memory. FBDIMMs perform great.... just have a few bugs to iron out. This platform will give AMD a run for it's money. :D

Intel said right from the start that Conroe would be 40% faster. Even they seemed to have underestimated it ;)

ehh? cough....unimaginably HUGE latency....cough

Do we have any info on the AM2 launch? I get the feeling AMD is going to try to beat Intel to the punch this round...maybe a June release?

My gut instinct (I don't work for Intel or AMD, not am I specially informed) is that AM2 will come AFTER Conroe. AMD may be trying hard to get their new platform out, but to be honest it won't even compare because of how far behind AMD is in the manufacturing technologies department.

And to the comment that said Intel will not be able to supply enough Conroe's to saturate the market in July, THINK AGAIN! We are talking some serious manufacturing power. They can pump them out ten times faster than AMD, which is a company totally constrained when it comes to meeting demand.

To be fair, though, AMD is closer behind Intel in the 65 nm process than it was in the 90 nm process. If AMD pulls off a Q3/early Q4 65 nm introduction, they won't do too bad.

AMD was behind Intel's 90nm about 5 months. Intel was said to have been stockpiling Preslers since early fall of last year. In any case, they were go as of 3 months ago. Clearly, the gap has widened and not shrunk.

AMD was 9 1/2 months behind, according to AnandTech--where are you getting your information? And no, it's not clear that AMD has slipped further because you haven't supported your statements with any sort of verifiable evidence.

i heard conroe was gonna b 4 the lga775....

but then i spose 20% from a socket just like that is sorta hard to do.....

Sure, but what they're launching is nothing but a Platform change and Pacifica. This will be like going from Prescott Socket 478 to Socket 775 and adding VT. AMD will then move this layout to 65nm by the 4th quarter and ship this until they finish K-10. The best info I saw wat Sept-07 with Ramp up in Q4 07 and since these will be smaller and on 300mm wafers, AMD intends to Double their current output by the Fall of 08. All do-able.

They key will be how far in the red will they be by then.

Actually 1 year, hehehe! Then they had to pay IBM another 400 million to fix it.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20031203151532.html

They launched on my Birthday, Feb 1st. I said one year because the first 90nm lived 6 weeks then Venice launched and took almost a quarter to RAMP up.

I probably wouldn't buy an FX60 right now. Actually I would never buy one. It's ~ $1100 and in many games it doesn't seem to give that big a difference in performance over a processor that is 1/3 of the price. I would go with an X2 3800+ since the newer ones seem to overclock really well, or even an Opteron 165, since they should hit FX60 speeds fairly easily. Then again, the FX60 would most likely clock higher overall, but to me the small performance gain isn't worth it. You would save ~ $800 by going with the X2 3800+ or Opteron 165, which would be enough for the Conroe, a new MB, and 4GB of DDR2 when it is released. That is just what I would do right now. Of course I already purchased an Opteron 165 a while ago, so I am ready to get the Conroe whevever it is released.

Very, very wrong. You can't compare Intel to AMD when it comes to manufacturing capacity or capability. AMD isn't even in the same ballpark when it comes to the number of fabs Intel has or their track record when it comes to nailing manufacturing processes. Die shifts are one reason behind a fair bit of AMD delays we have seen in the past.

Not to mention, you're not taking into account a smaller manufacturing process as well when it comes to the economics and quantity of Conroes produced.

Here is a press release:
http://www.intel.com/pressroom/kits/events/idfspr_2006/20060313_multicore_fact_sheet_decoder.pdf

Intel also expects to ship its
first desktop optimized processor, codenamed “Conroe”, based upon the new, state of the
art, energy efficient Intel® Core™ microarchitecture in third quarter of 2006.

As far as manufacturing, Intel has enough fabs to make as many processors and chipsets as you like.

You must have not been following the thread. We were talking about launches of processors, not how many they can Make or How fast they can RAMP up. The point was if AMD or Intel had something, they each love to toot their horn. This time AMD had nothing so they've been quiet and Intel had something, Conroe and they let it be known.

The problem is AMD can make more processors 19% of the processors made. Their problem as they admit themselves is that Intel rakes in 90% of the money with about 79% of the processors made, that other 2% is IBM, VIA , Transmeta and etc... That leaves 10% for everyone else.

Ok, when I responded to you, my first thought was AMD started making Winchesters in mid-July '04, because of the week 30 ones, and Intel launched Prescott Feb'04. Before, I even finished, I realized I was wrong but didn't bother to change the number because I vaguely remembered Winchesters were available Dec'04. Soon after I finished posting, I made another post in another thread where I went with this knowledge.

After looking at your response and 3 seconds of thought, I realized that the second assumption was again, wrong, and you are also wrong, and Anandtech(where's your link?) was also wrong... because I was subtracting an availability date from a launch date.

So, I did some searches.

(1) If we go by shipping dates for 90nm, Prescott started shipping after launch in Feb'04

the Prescott will ship in 3.2-, 3.0-, and 2.8-GHz speed grades beginning on Monday

Winchesters started shipping around Aug'04

AMD also confirmed it had begun shipping processors on its 90-nm manufacturing process for revenue

So, that is 6 months.

(2) If we go by shipping dates for 65nm, Presler started shipping Q3 '05 or Oct '05

As part of its third quarter earnings announcement, Intel confirmed that it has begun shipping 65 nm dual-core Presler processors

Q3 if it was included in the earnings report, October if it was not.

Now, I say to you, it is 6 months since October and AMD has not been shipping 65nm parts.

So, whatever you said about being fair,

(A) AMD has not started shipping 65nm yet, nor have they announced a specific quarter much less month, week, or date. You don't know exactly how far they will be behind Intel

(B) It doesn't matter because your point is that AMD is now closer behind Intel. In fact, they've already missed that bus.

Is that enough verifiable evidence for you?

*grumbel*

I've decided to wait until Conroe comes out. The only sad thing is, the research I've been reading says the XE wont be out until Q4 =(
