Conroe vs. Allendale?

I can't seem to find much information at all on Allendale. What's the difference between it and Conroe? I can only seem to find an E6300 Allendale listed anywhere and everyone claims it's an OC'ing rockstar, but that's about all I can find. Should I wait for there to be an E6600 Allendale (the E6600 is what I am about to order), or should I just grab the Conroe? I have a T7600 Merom in the laptop I am posting this from, and I love it. I want to take my desktop to Core 2 Duo, but if Allendale is going to be worth waiting for, I will wait. (Don't even talk to be about Kentsfield, I am not going quad-core until more software is written to take advantage of any number of cores greater than one :p).

Allendale are the 2mb version Conroe's, or in another light, they are Conroe's with half of their cache disabled. This is why the majority of E6300's can easily go to e66/6700 speeds since they are generally speaking, the exact same chip.

So, you don't have to 'wait' for anything.

RMA'ed my Allendale (E6400) bc it ran hot and didn't OC great. Just got my Conroe (E6600) today.

Don't know if it'll go any higher, but it sure as hell won't go lower and will probably be cooler.

WOW, no wonder why intel seems to have jump up there prices lately  Dont take this the wrong way, but I cant stand people like you. :D

cantStand++;

Bill

Lol FU guys :) It ran too hot. Thats why I rma'ed, but I'm not going to apologize for that.

We're talking stock voltages et al and a Scythe Infinity still at 48ºC

I do like the cantStand++ but if YOU had my chip it would be cantStant &= 0;

I suppose the temperature is reason enough, but might I recommend that next time you don't mention the overclocking thing ;-) People just as myself are real sensitive about others RMAing for poor overclocking.

If my CPU idled at 48, stock on a Scythe Ninja, I'd RMA it for sure...
Or i'd reseat the heatsink, because 99% positive that is what the problem would be.

I re-sat the sink a few times actually, tried arctic ceramique and silver 5. As I was sure that was the problem, but it was not. I got my E6600 today so I'll know for certian later.

If it was a good overclocker with bad temps, I probably would have kept it. Anyway, I've got flexible enough morals to be OK with rma'ing a few items here and there. Don't even get me started on Walmart's Rental Policy.

To the OP: I have a Conroe now :)

Here's a basic explanation of the differences.

That explanation is ambiguous and I dare say wrong

Read the article that mattrickulater posted. Allendale is not available yet!

E6300, E6400, E6600 are all CONROE CPUs.

Thats very interesting... You should fix it since I obviously don't know enough to fix it myself...

I agree. Then again, I am sitting on my mediocre 165 and shitty 3000+...

Don't take my comment the wrong way, I wasn't inferring that and meant no offense. I was just pointing out that the info was incorrect.

Did you check the voltage or just leave it on Auto? You know Auto often overvolts them, especially when overclockerd. What about case cooling, what was ambient? etc?

MAYBE:
You just happened to have a chip that the heat spreaded didn't get mounted properly. It was surely good enough for an OEM system or stock/ non-overclocked chip They dont guarantee overclockability. Still nothing was wrong with the chip, so I hope you're charged a re-stocking fee. (as a surcharge to get a better chip, instead of that e-tailer putting the higher costs on to other consumers like me)

haha... relax.. I truly meant what I said. no sarcasm intended.

I know the basics about the allendale / conroe debate. I think you should edit that page and straighten it out.

;)

RMAing because of temps = LOL

Unless you had a majorly concave heatspreader, that's ridiculous.

I just love it when people complain about temps, but fail to say what ambient temps were, what case and airflow conditions they have, or where they read the temps from. A Scythe Ninja isn't going to cool a chip inside the oven you know.

And to the guy who RMA'd because of a 48'c temp, that's well below MaxT.

so anyone know a quick and easy way to solder the heatsinks of the CPU and GPU together? the thermal pad is tooo weak. that why the GPU temp is constantly at high 60 or low 70 with no load.

not to mentionthe chipset's heatsink is just a flimsy 1.in.sq. copper plate. if we can cool down the chipset, i think we can lower the CPU temp even more

You ain't the only one, if you don't state you're ambient temp, case air flow situation and what program you're reading you're temps how can anyone give you accurate advise? (besides that, software temp programs are inaccurate and are only a "base line")

I fold 24/7 with 2x E6600's both OC'ed 3 GHz (333 FSB, vcore 1.344 according to CPU Z, 1.135 in BIOS), both in Biostar TForce P965 boards, my ambient temp is 22c. 1x is in a Antec 900 (case fans on mid range). With Core Temp and SpeedFan the temp "rocks" between 33c to 35c (hottest core) with a Zalman 9700 HSF..

My other E6600 is in a "no name case", WC'ed by a Apogee WB (unbowed ATM), MCR220 rad ATM, fans pulling, I want a MCR320), MCP350 pump (stock top ATM) and tied together with 3/8" tubes (ATM). I have fans on my video card, NB chipset and SB chipset. My temp readings by Core Temp and SpeedFan "rock" between 30c and 31c. (I just remounted the WB, I'll get better temps when the AS5 cures, I panicked once before)

If my temps are not in the comfortable range (low, I'm "temp anal"), instead of the RMA hassle (it's a last resort with me), I just reseat the HSF or WB (always with Artic Silver 5 TIM), look for ways to increase my case flow or look for ways to lower my ambients.

Seeing my rigs fold 24/7, pretty much unattended, I only mildly OC' them to 3 GHz. I think I've had 1x E6600 to 3.4 GHz or 3.6 GHz, I can't remember. It was either with a 8x multi or a 9x multi. (shrug) If my temps ever registered > 70c I'd probably have a "heart attack". Like I said "no extreme OC'ing

Edit: Believe me, if you listen carefully you'll get some "dynamite" advice from some of the people on this forum. I know I did, my problem was "selective" listening. (only hearing what I wanted to hear), I have since tried to cure that.
