I've finally pieced my new system together and ordered all the parts:

New parts:

cpu: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
motherboard: ASUS P5W DH Deluxe
video card: Visiontek X850XT
power supply: OCZ GameXStream 600W
ram: G.Skill F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ DDR-800 4-4-4-12 2x1GB
chassis: Lian-Li V-1200B Plus
optical: PLEXTOR PX-755SA SATA CD/DVD burner
CPU HSF: Scythe Ninja Plus

Re-used parts:

Seagate Cheetah 15k.3 36GB HD with PCI SCSI card
Western Digital 320GB IDE drive
Keyboard, Mouse, Floppy and round IDE and floppy cabes


I wanted a cheap video card for now so I can wait for the next big thing and all I really do with my PC these days is play World of Warcraft and an X850XT will do the job at 1600x1200 or 1920x1080 no sweat. My current system is an AthlonXP 3200+ with X800XT and based on that AnandTech.com WoW performance guide I'm going to get a massive frame rate improvement because of the CPU upgrade alone.

I really like how the Scythe Ninja meshes with this Lian-Li case because you get two 120mm fans in-line with the heatsink. I'm hoping to OC to a nice and safe 3.2 to 3.4 ghz as my room gets fairly hot due to poor air conditioning performance.

Here's hoping the Scythe Ninja fits next to the motherboard heat pipe cooling!

Wow that is surprisingly close to what I am about to order. My question though is where did you order you Asus P5W DH? I can't find anywhere that has it in stock let alone even has it.

When's ASUS coming with their M2N-Eesque Conroe board?

I'm thinkin' $150 MAX for a mobo. Don't need SLi or CF, just SATA RAID and good OC's.

it is in stock i called. but just like other people here i don't need crossfire, until DX10. There is no reason to waste money on a motherboard when i will be getting a new one when RD600 comes out.

I'm thinking for a budget board to go with the Asus P5B or the MSI P965E Neo

and my last choice being the Abit AB9

Dude, those are just estimated ETA's they put up to give people an idea on when they expected stock. BLT already has them according to the guy i talked to and whether they have them or not they likely aren't shipping till around July 23rd. Thats almost a month away so i dont see the rush to order a motherboard now and end up maybe paying a premium for it. The reason why your not seeing many new boards and thinking you may not be able to get one is because they've just barely started shipping a few out since there isn't even a Conroe processor to put in them yet and wont be for several weeks.

I just ordered it from eWiz. I found the link originally on the xtremesystems.org forums. I'm glad I googled for the p5w DH again during my research because the link at the top that came up for eWiz showed a discount that you don't get if you go straight to their site. The discount took it down from $242 to $235, it's not much but hey. I paid like $200 for my Asus A7N8X from the initial shipment so I feel somewhat okay about spending only $35 more for this one :p.

Yea, my last nVidia card was an Asus Geforce2 of some kind; I really liked it. I got the 9700pro when it came out and paid far too much for it of course. Then like a sucker I paid too much again when the X800XT came out. This time I'm lucky because there's no killer game I'm dying to play that needs a lot of power to run good frame rates at high resolutions like DOOM3 when I got the X800. At this point in time I'm a hopeless WoW addict so I decided to just get a card that did the job and wait out the next big thing.

R600 certainly looks like a heavyweight contender! Imagine a crossfire setup of those things. I hope 8 lanes per PCI Express slot will be enough! If they are still using the dongle when R600 comes out then it probably will be right? I don't think I want the dongle anyway because I read that it can degrade image quality on CRTs. I still like my Mitsubishi CRT a lot and I'll probably keep using it until it breaks.

It's gonna be a long wait till 1st week of August which is likely when I'll finally get my Conroe..

It looks very nice to me feature wise. Actually, it's a bit bit overkill on features but no matter :). I've seen some overclocks on air well beyond the range I'm shooting for.

I want a sub $200, more like $150-170 range 965 (one card guy here) MB that has good OCing capabilities. I wonder if that Gigabyte will fall in that range?

That's the same range i'm in. I decided to get the Asus P5B or MSI P965E Neo

I think that gigabyte board will be like $180, but i'm not sure. Also gigabyte boards havn't been very reliable with intel at least, from what i hear.

Just a heads up, wiredzone told me they don't expect Conroes until the first week of August, which is why I cancelled my order with them.

Yea that's what they told me too. I haven't been able to find another retailer that can guarantee I'd get it sooner so I'm not gonna give up my place in line with WiredZone.

According to this Intel has pushed the release date back 4 days to July 27. Also, people are saying that even if retailers get their chips in stock before the official release date they will not be allowed to ship them until then anyway. End of July or early August seems to be the earliest anyone in the states will get their retail boxed chips. I'd love to be wrong about that though!

Lets continue this in the Conroe pre-order thread.

How did you get a retail Conroe already? I went to the link you gave me and looked at all the different models and they all say: Estimate ship time: 8/7/2006, take back order. I know a lot of people have engineering samples, is that what you got?

My bad. I should of said I ordered mine and should be getting it soon. Lili promised to pull some strings for me.
 
its funny how they put the 6600 at $399 and act like they're giving you a deal at $369, they seem a bit higher then most places
 
A little warning to those who want to overclock their processors on a P5W DH mounted upside down:

I just found out at xtremesystems.org that due to the fanless heatpipe chipset cooler on the P5W DH (and P5B deluxe) the system cases that mount the motherboard upside down (such as all the newer Lian Li models) cause the chipset to get very hot because the heatpipe cannot do its job properly. The reason is that the chipset gets positioned on the top and the liquid cannot fight gravity so it is unable to properly transfer the heat down to the big fins on the other end which you can put that little included fan on.

I think the upside down board will probably be stable at stock speeds if you use the included fan but it looks like overclocking is out of the question. The solution is to get a different chipset cooler such as the Swiftech MCX159-Cu. Unfortunately this means you must CUT the heatpipe off so you can replace the northbridge heatsink and leave the mosfet heatsink intact.

Well the guy who started the thread is using water cooling so he has much less air movement around the stock chipset cooler. However he did use the included fan and still couldn't get over 285fsb. People are easily hitting 400fsb / 3.6ghz on air cooling with an E6600 and the P5W DH. However, they are doing it on a test bench with big fans blowing at the motherboard. I'm going to upgrade the chipset cooling just to be safe since my board is going to be mounted upside down.
