Conroe issues (temp)

Umm no. The thrmal max case temp is 85C. This is normal full load. Even tho idel is 25C for most amazing how high those temps climb with these chips. Got to love how much these chips can take tho.
 
I've never built an LGA775 rig, but I remember the stock Intel cooler on my old 478 rig was rather easy to seat improperly. It had two arms which you threw to press the HSF into the CPU. With the arms in the wrong position, the HSF seemed tight enough, but I was getting horrible temps. I pulled on the arms, applying what I thought was enough pressure to break my CPU or motherboard, but they snapped into place and suddenly that sucker was clamped on to the retention mechanism like a vice. My temps were better after that.

Moral: double check that you're following HSF installation instructions (however confusing they may be) and be aware that what you think is a tight fit may in fact not be tight enough.

Do you not know what the max case temp for a Conroe is the core can take? Its 85C. Everybody here thinks 55C is too much. As long as the chip doesn't go over the max case temp on spec the core and cpus IHS can take its fine. That means even 70C for this chip can be normal heat ranges.

Just like my max case temp for my cpu is 70C. If my CPU goes to 65C it won't matter. I had my 754 go upto close to max case temp with the stock heat sink before and it never hurt it running like that for 3 months before I upgraded the cooler. I had it OCed abit.

I'd always set the comp to turn off if it went above the max case temp. You don't want it to go out of spec. As long as its in spec its fine.
 
If you still haven't solved the problem, the answer is simple:

Ditch the stock HSF.

The LGA 775 HSF "mechanism", if that's what you want to call it, is the worst type of mechanim ever made up by Intel. It's like 3 steps back from the Socket 478 mech, and a step back from the Socket 370 days. Then they have the nerve to include a fat heavy HSF that is only held by 4 tiny PLASTIC at that, pins. All the while not to mention warping the motherboard and possibly shorting out/breaking circuits. At my job, we've already killed 5 Socket 775 motherboards due to the way the HSF was being installed/uninstalled. The answer to this was:

Zalman 9500.

Get it, get it, GET IT. This will most likely solve all your problems. And while you're at it, make sure your case's airflow is set up properly.

Show us some pics of the inside of your rig, so that we can verify that it's not a rat's nest of wires, dust, or whatever else.
 
Thanks for the great replies. I agree with the above post. You know those drywall anchors that always seem to fuck up and not work? Thats what this intel hsf is like but worse.

So you wouls say go with the zalman over the arctic freezer then eh?

My digital camera needs batteries cause its a hog so I can't post pics now till I make a run to the store tomorrow for alcohol (rubbing lolz) and AAs. ITs good to know that the max temp is 85. That means my 62 that I occationally get (ive mounted this hsf so many times) will be good. I'm still investing in a better hsf cause I havt to overclock this sucker and get my money's worth. Supposed to be as good as a fx62 when overclocked.

Again, thanks for the awesome replies guys! Now if only I can get this ram back soon. Gotta send it back monday.

I laughed a good hearty minute when I first installed this pathetic attempt of a HSF. I'll never understand why we can't just have 2-4 points of contact and 2-4 screws like the Zalman. :p
 
I hate the LGA 775 heatsinks I broke 3 out of 4 of the tabs on my first attempt to put it on so I ghetto rigged it with 4 machine screws and a bunch of nylon washers and hoped it didnt short. The second time it worked just fine. Do diagnals first to make sure its on straight then the other two and do this with the mobo out of the case.

I recomend just getting a aftermarket hsf that bolts down and be done with it.

I had the same Problem personally. Broke two motherboards cause that thing is b**** to get on and off. Finally I just went with a thermalright XP-120 and it has worked flawlessly since then!

I put together my machine on friday. I have a E6700, Asus P5B Deluxe and the Zalman 9500 + Artic Silver 5 compound. I'm getting 35 degrees idle and 43 degrees load. My MB is always around 33 degrees. Overall the Zalman is pretty decent but I don't like it how it messes up the airflow in my case..
 
God just use screws, plastic washers, and nuts. Much better than the shitty lga plastic mounting stuff. That's what I did on my buddy's 820 rig. Put screws and plastic washers through the board, then put plastic washers and put nuts so the screws stay in place. Then mount the cooler having the screws go through the mounting holes on the cooler and use nuts (wingnuts might work better, easier). Pretty simple.

I just finished the repair job of that lady's Celeron you saw on that Order from August the 2nd. I used one of the Stock Fan/Heatsinks on it and it installs in about 10 secs LOL! It worked fine for here 2.53 Celeron D. This is installed in a mATX case aswell BTW. I don't quite get all of the complaints.

I installed the Ninja to test mine out and it took about 3 minutes.
