Conroe bugs

No... those are nothing to worry about really. Those "bugs" are things that you will probably never encounter and if you did... you proably wouldn't even realize it. Every single stepping of silicon has an errata (bugs)... most aren't a big deal. Don't stress and buy your CPU.

Wow wasn't aware of that.

The last line of the article kind of scares me:

"One of the bugs listed, AI 39, could lead to serious data or system corruption, Intel warned."

The exact description of AI39 from the pdf linked in the article is:

"Cache Data Access Request from One Core Hitting a Modified Line in the
L1 Data Cache of the Other Core May Cause Unpredictable System
Behavior"

According to the pdf they plan to fix it in a later stepping...fat lot of good it does us early adopters.

I'd like to just dismiss it off hand, but I'm still kind of concerened.
And frankly I'm not too thrilled that I shelled out top dollar for something that may jeopardize my data.

Maybe it's just par for the course.
I'd never bought a processor this close to its release.
This time I needed one ASAP because I fried my previous one.

The second article seems to indicate that it's nothing to worry about.
Honestly I'll probably never notice it...I hope.

I don't see the big deal. So your system might die. All the info in on the harddrive so you RMA your chip and you'll get the new stepping version when it's out.

Yea LOL! Like my last Thunderbird 1333MHz proc ;) !

I believe the point is that data on your harddrive could become corrupted...

Anyway, what if my system doesn't die can I still RMA the chip because I'm a scaredy cat? :D

Ah... the famous "cache bug" LOL... While I'm not going to comment too much on it, let me just say that it wouldn't stop me from buying a CPU now, and it doesn't keep me from running an older B0 stepping in my home PC.

Put it this way , if its really bad they will call them in and if they do ,we get another cpu. :p

Dear god... don't even imply "CPU recall." The way the rumor mill around here kicks into overdrive on this sort of shit you'll see it on the front page in a day or so. :D They ARE NOT going to do a CPU recall..... There is no need.... this "bug" is NOT a big deal.

I think you should get rid of that messed up B0 stepping its quite buggy. In fact, I'll do you a favor and trade you my Pentium D 920, it has fewer errata since its a much more mature chip. (prescott --> 800's --> 900's)

Will you? Wow... that's SOOOOO nice of you. Let me get back to you with my info so we can make the swap. :D

LOL..... NOT!@!@!!! :D

I think Errata AI20 is interesting, if only because it seems to me that it could be the reason some people are getting the rounding error in Prime95.
I don't claim to know the code of Prime95, so it may be that the right conditions are not met for the error to manifest itself. If you KNOW that it is not the case, please comment. If you just DONT THINK it's the case, hold the flames.

I also perform a good deal of finite element analysis on my C2D, so I'd sure like to know if this will affect the accuracy of Mechanica code.

AI26. Premature Execution of a Load Operation Prior to Exception Handler Invocation

Ummm... I think AI # 26 is what happens when geeks get too excited about Conroe.

LOL

Its just wishful thinking , I will have a hard time trying to proove its not working cos mine iis still in the box.Picture this I go to the retailer and say "well, I bought this a long time ago and I get no visuals from it , it does not run at 2.4ghz , its temps do not change, it does not do the teraflops calcutlations ,I have been doing the calculations, it just looks at me, basically it doesnt do anything , it was so difficult for me to point out the problem that i had to wait for Errata to save the day, please will you change this one?" the shop keeper then asks me"the motherboard ? and which one did you use sir" and I say " my mother is not bored ,also I only use the one mother and that is not your problem, cant you just keep this conversation strictly on the cpu and not bring other family members into it, especially my mother, your disgusting and asking me if she is bored." and then give him meanies.

He then changes it , which will then sit in the same place the other one sat for the last month.

they are just like every other company. F you we got your money.
If its screwed buy a new one and shut the F up.

FYI, When you buy pilot build for any cpu, be it Intel or AMD, you are essentially an unpaid Beta tester...

Been telling people this for a long time now...

The same holds true for most devices related to home PC's...

AI32: Upper 32 bits of "From" address reported through BTMs or BTSs may be Incorrect

Unless I'm misunderstanding it, this one could have some serious consequences if unchecked.

Also check out AI43. And we've already covered AI39. And good lord to AI65!

Well even if there are bugs with conroe, as said, we'll probably not even experience most of them. And even if we do i doubt it'd be a catastrophic systems failure... i hope.

Not to mention processors before these probably have bugs that we may not even be aware of. If someone told me my old P2 or P3 didn't have any bugs i'd just laugh...

Agreed. Don't they make compilers so that the situations mentioned in eratta never come up?

Sure. As long as you only use software compiled after conroe came out, you'll be just fine.
If you use software older than say last week, you might have a problem.

so what's the consensus? am i going to be upgrading my conroe soon because of this?

Every processor on the market has some kind of errata=P Conroes are stable, at least mine hasn't crashed or corrupted anything.

yup, that they do. i know amd has a whole long list of stuff on the K8's as well.

Thanks eclipse. When Firefox downloaded that particular piece of HTML, the CPU saw it and remembered it was buggy, and promptly BSODed. And then BSODed when I tried to reboot. I say, the thing has such an attitude problem...

better break out the paddle and show that core who's boss. it works well when trying to get memory to 600mhz  :D

son of a didly...I just placed an order for my system yestarday, why I didnt read this thred!!!

Damn Intel...

Naw, you got nothing to worry about. If the Conroe sucked as much as my motherboard, I'd here tearing Intel a new ass LOL! In fact, if the North Bridge was cooler, I would bee-yotch about the mobo.
