Best Buy Among First To Offer Intel Core 2 Duo Desktops >> 04:00 PM - John JCal Callaham
( 5 comments )

CNet News.com is reporting that Best Buy will be among the first retail stores to offer PCs that use Intel's upcoming Core 2 Duo processors. While PC companies will be allowed to take orders on their web sites for their Core 2 Duo systems starting on July 27, they cannot start shipping systems until Aug. 8. On that day, Best Buy said 200 of their stores will have Core 2 Duo systems from Velocity Micro available for purchase.

I am hoping to see them on shelves today but the prices come down today so its all good .

My ram SuperTalant is still not here anyway , it will be quite useless without the ram. I will hopefully have it all by next week. :)

I've been doing that for more than a month :D!

The *OFFICIAL* announcement date is the 27th from Intel, but they could arrive any time this week if I had to guess. Tankguys sent out an email to pre-order customers saying they were told to expect them likely this week, but not as a guarantee.

You will be able to buy Conroe chips this week. If you read/heard the Intel conference call, they said channel availability the 27th, OEM the 7th of August, that's why Best Buy isn't selling them until the 7th.

so they only releasing already built pcs with conroe on the 27th? And OEM...chip only on the 7th? Or are they releasing full package chip with box and manual etc on the 27th...and OEM as you said meaning soley just chip, on the 7th?

OEM means places like Dell, Velocity Micro, etc. Chips on the 27th, systems on the 7th.

thank you...can I expect to order and have shipped a conroe chip by next week?

I am not sure whether to wait and see the 27th if more places have them up like newegg...or whether i should pre-order from tankguys when they have no guarantee of arrival.

I would pre-order from Tankguys... probably the best bet for getting one quickly and at a non-incredibly-high-profiteering price :). They're a great vendor, too.

I pre-ordered from TG when they first started offering it. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the bigger stores get them in stock sooner though, but I'm not going to sweat it. It's hard to even get motherboards right now anyway, so having to wait for the chip a few extra days doesn't make much difference to me.

Patience is a Virtue. what does 2 weeks wait really mean in the grand scheme of building your PC? Unless you have a Lan Party to go to.

In terms of having no main PC, or in terms of having already waited 5 weeks or so? ;)

yeah that...and also I really would like to have this fully built before august 10th...since im going to be on vacation away than...and going to college soon after! So i need to have this built...plus i would like to use if before i go to college lol.

im not sure about pre-ordering from tankguys, if newegg will have it on the 27th since im gonna order an lcd and ram from newegg soon. Tankguys seem reliable but newegg wouldnt have them more expensive than TG?

I would consider pre-ordering now..but it seems its already too close to launch date for it to make any differance i.e. would not get first shipment since they dont have many available. My best bet must be to wait till 12am on the 27th...and scan throughout the day looking for online vendors with it ready to order/ship. How does that sound?

Quakecon starts on August 3rd - I need my Conroe before then! :(

Good Point.. Same for the Guy that Has no PC.. I couldnt imagine having no PCs around.. Heck, I thought most people (at least ones that post here) kept 3 or 4 laying arround.

I want one bad too. But if I had no PC, I'd build a PC with a 965/975 motherboard and slap a cheap ($100) Pentium D 805 (2.66Ghz) in there for a few weeks until they became available.

BTW, I have 3 PC's at home so no rush, but I will probably upgrade my main by X-mas at the latest to Core2

I am runnign off of a recently installed XP, and I am not able to "settle into" it becasue it is jsut going to get wiped in less than 2 weeks when I build my conroe system. So the delays are painful, though it does not compare to trying to work it in before quakecon. Next year I may be going, live up in NH, so it is a serious drive and a serious expense.

There are already a handful of available motherboards, and some are doing quite well in early tests(Gigabyte DS3).

Why not just do Sysprep / Reseal in 2 weeks instead of a complete new install. Its works wonders.
