Conroe 64-bit performance @ xbitlabs

Looks like it takes two same/similar micro-ops (little tiny instructions for the cpu core) and when possible, combines them into one and executes them at the same time, thus making the cpu go faster.
 
Intel uses what they call macrofusion to combine common instruction pairs into something called a micro-op to be sent through the decoder to the execution core together at the same time. Previously, each instruction was sent through the decoder to the execution core by itself, even if a similar instruction was waiting right behind it. So by using macrofusion, Intel’s Wide Dynamic Execution engine increases the amount of instructions that can be sent to the execution core in any given period of time. This increases efficiency, which in turn increases performance and decreases power usage.

that conclusion table is kind of misleading.

B/c the 32 bit mode of Conroe just completely kicks ass, so even if it had a 20% drop for 64 bit performance and the FX had a 5% increase, the Conroe could still be ahead. like the SiSoft Sandra 2007 Drystone ALU test.
 
it was measuring % gains from going 64 bit, its not misleading, it is not a table of absolute performance
 
amd shows greater 64bit potential by far.. this is early testing with shiffty drivers and support when 64bit fleshes out.. if it fleshes out in this cycle of chips amd may find itself with even greater gains in 64bith mode then seen here. this could be troublsome for Intel if they consistently show poor 64 bit power compared to amd this is amd's way back to the top imo in 2007 with visat 64bit edition i would bet amd solutions lead while intels lead in 32 bit edition.

its sad 64 bit is so many years behind schedule if it had hit full on 2 years ago like hoped amd may have dealt a crushing blow instead of just a market gaining one.

I think Conroe will show better 64-bit performance with the Intel compiler and performance will improve with mainstream compilers as the next generation matures.

Conroe already shows better 64-bit performance in general. A

And ofcourse it'll show better performance with an Intel compiler. It's only to be expected...

Just as I would suspect performance would improve as AMD further optimizers the core. Remember, improvement isn't an "Intel-only" street, even to those who hate AMD with a passion ;)
