I'm planning to convert my office closet to an equipment closet. Everything will be rack mounted and the space will be cooled via AC zone with thermostat in the closet. The issue is that the cable runs for my monitors, keyboard, mouse will need to be about 15 meters long.

USB: I can use powered hubs to cover the distance, although I'm not certain what kind of latency or other issues this may introduce.

eSATA: doesn't seem possible. Specification seems to max eSATA cable length at 2 meters. Not a deal breaker, but it would have been nice to have my blueray drive in an enclosure on the desk.

Displayport: I need to connect 3x Dell U3011 monitors. Displayport spec for this resolution maxes at 3 meters. I did find this as a possible solution, but theres no way I can drop $2,400 for three cables.

Has anyone else done something like this, are there other options to connect peripherals to computer 15 meters away?

usb over ethernet may work (they have adapters for it).

If you went with hdmi screens instead of displayport then you could get much better range(maybe they sell adapters?

HDMI cannot do 2560x1600@60Hz, adapters or no.

there are 10m displaylink cables, they are note expensive
http://www.amazon.co.uk/LogiLink-DisplayPort-10m-Kabel-20pin/dp/B003Y5IG4U/
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fisual-Super-Pearl-Display-Cable/dp/B002DTY1BK/

3m needed for full bandwidth (3840 × 2160 × 30 bpp @ 60 Hz), but you need half of it or less (in case 24 bpp)
"Reduced bandwidth transmission for 15 meter cable (at least 1920x1080p60, 24 bpp)"
10m for your resolution looks possible, you can order this 3 different cables, and return if some of them will not work

there are passive and active 10m usb cables, if you will use internal monitor usb hun - probably you need to use passive cable
esata - it doesn't even work properly on 1.8m :( may be usb blu-ray can work, not sure
may be usb 3.0 is better for long distances, but I didn't know much about new version

hdmi 1.3 and 1.4 can http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Version_comparison

I used a Gefen DVI over CAT5 adapter, worked great, but I have one monitor and my PC is about 20m away from my desk

USB over CAT5 is generally only going to be USB 1 (aka SLOW) unless you drop some serious $$$ on a proper extender... although for 10m you might be able to just find an active USB cable
