Connection Speed vs Rendering Speed

I was hoping that someone would be able to help me out. I have tried searching around the web, but have been coming up empty handed. I am trying to understand how much mobile web browsing is effected by processor speed and browser architecture vs connection speed. I have seen direct phone to phone comparisons like iphone vs n97 and 3g vs 3gs which gives me a pretty good idea but nothing concrete. The findings lead me to believe that a large majority of the time is spent rendering and not transmitting data, but I was wondering if someone has done or seen tests to back up the evidence.

Not a scientific test or anything, but my Nokia E71 will display the same pages much faster on wireless than on 3G, so I tend to believe connection speed is much more important than rendering time.
 
on my iPhone 3GS connection speed is the limiting factor. pages load much quicker when i'm on wifi.

the answer to your question may vary from case to case though. maybe a phone with slower hardware will be limited by rendering speed where as a phone with faster hardware is limited by connection speed.
 
on my treo800w, the rendering speed seems more important. my 3g connection has been blazing fast the last few months though, solid 100kB/sec download... and when i switch to wifi, it is faster, but not by much.

right now, my phone is in my truck, letting my truck pc get online. i am controlling it from the house with logmein, and the speed is just amazing... not a far cry from being on my local network! hulu even works... i can stream hulu while driving down the road.. its working better now then it did when i bought the phone 8 months ago. sprint is obviously continuing to beef up their network, and its just been fantastic around here.
