I currently have Logitech Z-560 and the left front speaker no longer works. While I could open up the sub and try to replace the fuse, I have lots of other projects going on that time to research how to do so and (de)soldering experience is limited and so I'm opting to simply replace them.

Originally I was going to go w/ another set of PC speakers (Logitech Z-5500), but for a little more I saw that I could get a home speaker setup and a receiver that would allow for more sound sources (in the event that I want to expand in the future).

I've done as much research I could (w/ the limited time that I have, best source I've come across so far: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/259/1), but are the only things I need to connect non-pc speakers to my system the following?

  • 5.1 Speakers (w/ Digital connection if available on the sub)
  • Receiver w/ Digitial connection

Will I need an amplifier as well?

I believe I'm covered on the sound card part. I have the Lanparty JR P45 which has an integrated sound card that has digital output connections (coaxial and optical).

Receivers have built in amplifiers.

You can buy a processor and an amp separately, but in your case it sounds like you want a receiver and passive speaker setup.

Connect to the receiver via optical or coaxial, and then connect the passive speakers via speaker terminals.
