This may be more of a networking/ storage questions but I want to see if I can get someone to give me some insight as it is related to VMWARE.

NFS or iSCSI for an whitebox storage server based on freeBSD 9.3.0.2 (Nas4Free Build)?

Has anyone plugged ethernet cables directly into the NICs on the host and storage box before to achieve GigE?

I have used iSCSI off of FreeBSD and OpenIndiana just like you have described. If it works, you'll know as the link lights on the NICs will light up.

You simple have to assign an IP to each side within its own subnet.

Note: I believe a Crossover cable will work fine, but you might need a passthrough cable.

Yes, although you'll need the NFS patch for BSD since they changed how it handles sync writes.
