I'm a long time Nvidia user thinking of coming back to ATI. I have a 7900GT in my main rig and want something faster. 7900GTX cards are too expensive and hard to find. There's a FS/FT thread here where someone is selling 2 for $300 each, but I need to be able to toss the new card on a CC. From what I hear, the 8800 series cards have tons of issues, which prevents me from wanting one of them (especially since I can't justify the price anyway). So, I'm looking around on Newegg and I find the card in the thread title for $215 with $6 shipping and a $15 MIR. I did a little research and it seems the X1900XT cards perform on par with a 7900GTX and for $200 it looks like one helluva deal.

I have a couple questions before I jump on this deal, however. First of all, the last time I used ATI (9800 Pro) I was less then impressed with the drivers. What is the current state of ATI drivers? Secondly, I've never heard of connect3D. Can I trust buying this product? I'm just shocked at how good the price is on this and that makes me wary... ;)

I think it's a great deal, ATI drivers are fine, the only issue is this is a loud card compared to x1950pro or x1950XTX.

- don't forget you can use a CC through Paypal to buy stuff privately.

- now is really not a good time to buy, cause by Feb/March prices should tank when all the new stuff comes out. But then that's probably why this card is cheap now.

Thanks for the reply. It looks like a good deal, so I think I'm gonna do it. I want it right away, instead of waiting a month or two, so I think I'll just go ahead and buy it. The 7900GTX card is tempting, but it's more expensive and reviews show the X1900XT as close in performance (or better in some areas). I'm kinda old skool in that I don't use paypal. Don't trust it. Heck, I don't even use eGay... :p

Since you asked, I will do so...

I can't decide what to do though. Here is my dilemma. I have two rigs, a main rig and a LAN party PC. My main rig is in my sig and my LAN party rig is a nice C2D system. Both have 7900GT's. The problem is this, my main rig has an extreme edition of the 7900GT, clocked higher then the vanilla 7900GT in my LAN party rig. Using the plain vanilla 7900GT, my LAN party rig will OC to only 2.6Ghz, but with the extreme edition from my main rig, it'll hit 3.2Ghz. Also, the slot where I put my video card in for my LAN party case has a stripped screwhole. What I'm thinking of doing is this, I get the X1950XT and put it into my LAN party rig. Since it's a double slot card, the screw can go in the other hole and hold the card securely in place (I used to have a 6800U in the case, so I know this to be true). Then, I can take the vanilla 7900GT and add it to my main rig in SLI. I have to downclock my extreme edition card to do this, but the benefit of adding a second card should make up for that. Thus, both systems will end up having better then 7900GTX graphics power. Of course, if the LAN party rig seriously outperforms the main rig, I just might have to swap hardware... :D

Thank you. I think that's what I'll do for now, testing each PC to see how things work out... ;)

im thinking of that too, tell me how that runs

It's running very nicely thus far. Big boost over my 7900GT, that's for sure. Just installed it and ran some demos and everything is purring right along. Need to go test some games... :D

I always thought 9800pro drivers were very good... It just had a high defective rate... It was the only time I ever RMA the card to ATI... Twice! Good thing it had 3 years warranty on those... No wonder ATI changed to 1 year from now on...

1950xt is probably a better choice since it does have HDCP and higher memory speed than 1900xt...

I'm not upgrading anymore until there are games out that won't let me play with a modded 1900gt...

The game I remember the biggest problems with was NOLF2. I bought the game and there were horrible texture problems that just ruined it for me. I kept waiting, but even a year later they didn't have drivers that fixed the issue... :(
