Connect notebook HDD to desktop?

The mobo on my notebook died and I would like to connect the notebook's HDD (Hitachi) to my desktop mobo (A8V) in order to recover some files. I hooked the HDD via a 40 pin connector cable to one of the mobo IDE connectors but it doesn't show up in the BIOS and Windows doesn't recognize it. I don't know if this has any bearing: I am running a SATA RAID 1 setup on the VIA controller with the desktop HDDs.

What do I need to do?

You'll need an adapter: Google knows. That info should be enough to get you started, Notebook drives are 44 pin, Desktop ATA is 40 pin. The other 4 pins are for the power supply, which is why the adapter is necessary.

then everything should be nice and dandy.....unless you killed the hard drive too..heh

I have the adapter and connected it. This one had a separate power plug. connected it, but the desktop doesn't "see" it, either in BIOS or Windows.

Any idea why?

Did you use the master (black) or slave (gray) connector on the IDE cable?

I used the black master. Just disconnected one of my DVD drives, both of which are setup as Masters.

i have a 80gb USB external HDD, about 2 y/o. recently the desktop quit being able to access it. i opened it up, remounted the disk drive on the board and it works fine now.
