For a number of reasons I'd like to be able to connect consoles through my pc via hdmi. Can this be done in a way which will run well and use my pcs audio output?

You'll need a capture device like the Elgato HD60 or Hauppauge HD PVR 2. You can expand the capture window on your PC to full screen and play live without recording AFAIK.

If it's for gameplay then don't bother. Capture cards introduce a lot of lag in the preview window which makes it almost impossible to play shooters properly. Even when capturing in low-def format such as component cables you still get almost 400ms or more of delay between what you capture and what you actually see.

If you're doing it for convenience then your best bet is getting a monitor with both DVI or HDMI inputs and using that or using a splitter to switch inputs. As for using your PC to passthrough audio. Yes that is very possible, just hook your console up to the PC's audio-in port either through optical-in or using a 3.5mm HDMI-Split connection or optical to 3.5mm, there are many ways to do this. Then using your PC's options go to your recording device, properties, listen tab, check "Listen to this device" and "Playback through this device: select your device". You can also rig your controllers microphone to do this to use your headset microphone.

Why I want it is because I want to be able to use my headset with them (usb connection) and also I have calibrated the colors to near perfect with a device called "spyder" and would like to make benefit of its effects.

Sorry to bump but it's been falling.

Is there maybe a way to convert my usb headset to receive audio from a 360 and ps3? My monitor's 3.5mm out makes the right ear a little quieter for some reason and I'm a stickler for audio discrepancy like that. I know there are other ways of dialing down image quality so really as long as I can solve this audio thing the biggest problem is solved.

Another potential solution is a way of adjusting sound balance from the consoles (which doesn't seem to be in the settings) or between the headset and monitor (monitor doesn't have any settings other than volume.

Adjust the balance control in your software mixer if your channels are being amplified unevenly. Windows 7 doesn't seem to do per-application balance but you can get other freeware mixers that do. IndieVolume is one possibility (though they have a pay version, not sure if you need to pay or if you can avoid it), but I don't know what the best option out there is.

In relation to the high latency claim about capture cards a few posts above, it really depends on the specific hardware, drivers and software being used. It's not always that bad.

I know the consoles can use USB headsets directly to some degree, but I don't think compatibility is as good as a PC. Not sure why - they could be using a different protocol or something.

Sorry I didn't mean to blow you off. I just read the first line "get a monitor..." and assumed your option was gonna be pricey. I'll o ahead and give that a try.

Sure, just see if your motherboard/soundcard supports optical-IN if not, you'll need to convert the optical signal to RCA/3.5mm Digital Audio and hook that up into your motherboard/soundcard's Line-IN.

You would need some sort of converter box (pricey alternatives) you could probably find cheaper but these are examples.

Optical to Digital.

Or an HDMI/3.5mm adapter.

Unfortunately those are the only 2 ways since it's impossible to connect your HDMI connection directly to your PC and have it display properly without lag. And because your headset is USB it would need to be hooked up to a PC to process the audio and run with drivers so the console's audio would have to be hooked in as well.
