connect 2 esxi servers?

So I have 2 esxi servers up temporarily as I move stuff over. Is there some way to 'connect' them so I can play around with the fail over and VM live migration or would I need that $5000+ VCenter thing?
 
Yes, you need the vCenter thing, but you can get a 60 day trial license just by downloading vCenter. Also, VM live migration requires shared storage (i.e. NFS server or some such).

Thanks for the info. I wanted to have my new box boot up and start FreeNas which handles all the storage but I see I can't utilize a small partition on the usb-boot for freenas and don't want to throw a new drive in there now so welp.

At least it's a faster box and it can passthrough things
 
In an enterprise environment you can definitely connect your hosts together and migrate VMs between them. We have 14 hosts in our desktop cluster and 7 in our server cluster. You can put a server into maintenance mode and all the VMs will migrate off onto other hosts if you have available resources: ie, you need enough CPU, ram, etc. available on the running hosts to accept the VMs from the host going down. In your case, you would probably have enough resources available.

Clustered hosts also allow VMware HA to take over if a host goes down unexpectedly.
