I know, I know, we're all supposed to have faith in our government but headlines like this scare me to death. Let's just hope Washington can pull it together long enough to do the right thing when it comes to U.S. oversight of the internet.

The good news is it appears congressional leaders have agreed to rescue the internet in time to prevent the Sept. 30 expiration of U.S. oversight. Sen. Ted Cruz, who has pushed hard against the plan since it was announced two years ago, told me last week he’s “cautiously optimistic” legislators will block it through a rider to the federal budget: “The basic proposition of keeping the internet free has united Republicans across the spectrum and should also unite Democrats with Republicans.”

Through a rider on the federal budget..... Another stupid fucking thing our legislators do that should be banned. "I'll vote for the bill, but only if you gut everything it was originally set to accomplish, and then add a bunch of other completely unrelated crap....." Which is then voted for by other legilators who didnt read the bill or bother to look at the changes and act all surprised when they see what they voted for... Assuming their vote wasn't used fraudulently by another legislator, because voter fraud is only OK in the house/senate, not in regular elections.... Fuck our government....

We will see. I fear there are too many globalists in congress, and by allowing control to pass to the UN, then our internet can become censored and their message controlled.

That said, can always start a new one with better security :)

They have it already, just need to roll out IPv6....

Exactly my thinking. Shit, I remember reading about "Internet 2" back nearly a decade ago.

Would fit nicely with a government looking to update our infrastructure.

Plus would be hilarious - "here, have this old piece of shit internet. We're done with it and have the newer model." - (US giving World its hand-me-downs).

I'm a little confused here, so on Sept 30th the U.S. legal oversight runs out on ICANN? Is Obama trying to block a renewal of a bill, or have the govt sell ICANN, or is it just that the House hasn't renewed it yet, or are the politicians going to go full hostage mode on the renewal until the other side gives them something?

Does it mean then that they become a private company? And the Chinese or some other mega-corporation could buy out ICANN and start doing whatever the hell they want with domains/IP addresses?

Obama already released the rights to the UN, whose to take over at the end of the month. However there is a contingent in the agreement that allows congress to effectively block the transfer, so long as they choose to invoke it.

at the same time this administration is planning to give away more of "America" with this stupidity...Obonehead and his minions shoved imaginary "net neutrality" up your arse and got it regulated as a utility (which will eventually be applying your "user tax" to your bill) ,and that put it under total control by the FCC...so don't fret this little bit of shyte as you already got pimped for the sake of faux internet justice.

Counterpoint: Congress could fuck up a cup of coffee.
Correction: Congress fucks up everything they touch and many things they don't touch (due to gridlock).

I don't want my Congressmen to think that everything is either win or loose, I want them to compromise and actually get shit done for once in my life. I got to hand it to the military dictatorships out there. At least they get shit done.

It helps to get the bugs out of your ears. Its also easier to work with half a brain.

I remember thinking in college when I was connecting to the Internet on my 56k modem that the wonderful Internet was just too good to last.

Then all these shitheads showed up posting selfies and talking about how great their "wonderful" lives on Facebook.

The Internet was ruined about 10 years ago, bros.

This pisses me off so much.

Budget bill. Let's add a rider so that (insert some other thing that wouldn't be passed). If the Democrats vote against it because of that rider, the Republicans will say "They voted AGAINST the Budget bill. It's their fault!". (or the other way around, it definitely goes both ways).

Or they'll say "He voted to kill babies". No, he voted for the budget bill that someone included a rider on. He didn't want to shut down the government, and your stupid ass did the dead babies thing...

I like the free and open internet. It's not so much free or open much anymore, but it could get worse. I really hesitate to put trust in the government to make things 'better' with anything.

the ppl of this country is no longer independent and are on life support of the government. losing are freedom, are we not?
