Reuters is reporting that U.S lawmakers have formally asked Mark Zuckerberg to explain how 50 million users' data ended up in the hands of Cambridge Analytica. The request comes from The House Energy and Commerce Committee, and no date has been set for the testimony.

Things just keep going downhill for Zuckerberg and Facebook. The company lost over 60 billion in market value in 2 days, and they are still facing that potential injunction from Blackberry. I just hope this is a stepping stone to people becoming more aware about their personal data.

“The hearing will examine the harvesting and sale of personal information from more than 50 million Facebook users, potentially without their notice or consent and in violation of Facebook policy,” chairman Representative Greg Walden, a Republican who chairs the panel, and Frank Pallone, the top Democrat, and other committee leaders wrote in the letter.

I still dont see why everyone is so surprised about this. How do they think they make money? Do you think the transaction of data about you always goes perfect?

If a product is free you have to assume this type of thing is going on.

Facebook has gone way overboard than what you'd expect. They are going full Big Brother from the sci-fi shit I used to read. What's weird though, is that there are still a lot of people that really want to stick with it and continue to give them information. If you have nothing to hide....

Did everyone have to accept an EULA when visiting every website that has a [F]acebook icon at the bottom or a FB script ? Nope, but they tracked and created shadow profiles for everyone anyway with as much data as possible garnered in the process.

Have a selfie loving narcissist friend who still uses FB to upload pictures with you in them ? even just once that's you identified. Then have someone you never met upload a picture and you happen to be in the background ... yep that's your face tagged now and your location at the time all on the shadow profile. With the sites you visit, your IP address, your face, your friends (with all their political leanings and views associated to you) GEO tags from images identifying your location etc..

And yet you never once had a facebook account.

Should just call it FBi book.

btw many contract mobile phones have the FB app pre-installed and automatically running in the background, that you may not even see and icon for. Even if you don't have an account the app can and will use your camera and microphone and you guessed it.. shadow profile.

and why do they think he will actualy testify?
They probably don't expect him to testify. But now, when this topic comes up, they can say, "Zuckerberg refused to testify before Congress." That will taint, at least slightly, whatever discussion follows that statement.

Maybe because Congress didn't pass laws to protect the personal data of their constituents?

/Because capitalism is a ultra sharp double edged sword, wielded by corporate psychopaths, who bribe politicians with cash and other considerations. Yep, pretty sure it's this. After all, corporations are considered people too thanks to citizens united. Money in politics is a good thing according to the lawyers.

Maybe by some small minuscule chance this is the beginning of the end of that God awful website.
