Hey [H]ard|Forum,

I recently purchased a 8800GTS 512 for my computer. However, somethings seems to be bottlenecking the performance of it. I am pretty sure i found the problem. One of my RAM Modules are either damaged or my settings in BIOS is messed up.
My RAM Modules are:
2x1GB = 2GB
- Kingston HyperX 1GB (PC2-6400) DDR2 800
Timing - 4-4-4-12

- G.Skill 1GB (PC2-6400) DDR2 800
Timing - 5-5-5-15

My computer recognized that I have 2 GB, and that i am running DUAL Channel.. However, i am not sure that it is running correctly. The reason is because whenever i run one of my modules by itself, i receive the same performance as running both of them.
When i ran a MemTest, it detected that something is wrong with my G.Skill RAM but not the Kingston. I think this is bottlenecking my system.

Please Help.... Thanks in advance!

OK, wait. The G.Skill is slower, yes, but the difference between CAS4 and CAS5 is minimal outside of benchmarks. If you have both sticks installed you /must/ run the timings of the slower sticks, so 5-5-5-15, or you could run in to problems.

If Memtest gives errors on the G.Skill at 4-4-4-12 that's no great surprise, try running it again at 5-5-5-15. Also, make sure you are giving enough voltage to the RAM -- see what it is rated for. Usually running a vdimm of 2.0 to 2.1 is safe.

I don't think your RAM is the issue. Please give information on the rest of your setup.

What kind of numbers are you seeing in games, and at what resolution with what settings?

Where do I go in BIOS to change the timing to 5-5-5-15?

My Computer Specs :
DFi Infinity M2/G nF570 Mobo
2GB RAM (listed above)
XFX 8800GTS 512 MB
550 Watt Rosewill PSU
AMD Athlon 64X2 6400+(3.2Ghz)
Microsoft XP Home 32-Bit.

I play COD4 and CS:S.. I am getting around 80 FPS average on CS:S.
My 3dMark06 score is around 8900....
I SHOULD be getting 10k+... So idk whats bottlenecking my system

Thanks!

You should be getting a bit higher than that, yes, but 10K is pushing it with an Athlon 64, even a 6400+. The main difference is CPU score -- that's why we generally ignore 3DMark anymore. It's not an accurate reflection of performance.

Your PSU is pretty questionable, and I'd replace it ASAP. I doubt that's causing the slowdown though. Really, I don't know that there /is/ any slowdown. Do your games lag or have issues? If not, don't worry about it.

Look in your motherboard manual for where to set RAM timings. It varies. Make sure it's set to 5-5-5-15 T2 and vdimm (or RAM Voltage, it may be labeled) is at 2.0.

Im just trying to figure out what the slowdown is... But thanks i will fix those RAM settings.

EDIT: My RAM timings are at 5-5-5-15 and Voltage at 2.0. No improvement....

Please Help, I dont understand why 1 GB works better than 2 GB... Thanks.

Nothing changes, thats the problem. The 1 GB Module by itself will perform as good, if not, better than the 2GB so i know there is something wrong here. I am playing modern games and there is no difference.

...there's not going to be a substantial difference. Unless you were getting seriously bad hitching before, maybe. You're running XP -- it's not really RAM hungry. 1GB is fine for most things.
