Confusion about GPU's PSU reqs

I've been looking to get a 7900GT, but most of them that state PSU requirements say that you need at least 20A on the 12V. Is this only relevant if you have a PSU with only a one 12V rail? Would 18A on both 12V rails be good enough if that is what it is referring to?

Ok, if your card requires 20 amps, and PSU only delivers 18 amps, that won't be enough power, and your computer won't post, or boot up, and if it does boot, then it will shut down as soon as you start playing a game.

Remember, their are other things in your computer that require 12 volt power suplied to them such as your CPU.

If you plan on buying thiscard, get a bigger power supply. Check out Seasonics S2-430 or S2-500 at Newegg.

The question is not will a 18amp supply work it was will an ATX12v2.0 PSU that has dual 12v's rated at 18 amps each work.

The answer to which is most likely......pending the rest of the system (which is?). An ATX12v2.0 PSU with 2 12v's has 12v2 dedicated to the processor with 12v1 being dedicate to the rest of 12v devices. An ATX12v2.0 PSU though is not additive so 2 12v's can't simply be added as the yare most commonly fed by a single rectifier. The PSU is limited by the maximum capacity of the rectifier in such designs.

Oh, sorry for not providing the rest of my specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (slightly oced to 2.3 GHz)
MSI K8N Neo4
2 gigs of PC3200 RAM
DVD-RW/CD-RW combo drive
One 7200RPM Sata drive
Oooooold SB PCI sound card

With a single 7900GT it should be enough.....so long as the PSU is of good quality. What PSU are you considering?

Oops! I didn't read post carefully enough, my bad.

Well while Fortron units are generally good the Saga (AX) aren't quite as good as the FSP line units.

I would say there are better options out there. Are you up against a hard budget?

This one is a bit pricier but might be higher quality. I personally run from PSU's that are under $50. But that is me. Up to you.

Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-430 ATX12V 430W Power Supply - Retail

$69.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103928

Output +3.3V@28A, +5V@36A, +12V1@17A, +12V2@17A, -12V@1A, +5VSB@2A

Edit: I've heard that it's better to get a bigger PSU than you need because if you get a 400 watt and you run it near full capacity while gaming it is similar to taking a 1/2 ton pickup and pulling near it's maximum load capacity at full throttle jsut to keep up with traffic. Whereas you can buy a bigger 3/4 ton pickup with a bigger motor and it won't have to work as hard to pull the same load. Make sense?

I'm not an electrical engineer so I don't know if that holds true to a PSU.

I'd like to keep it under $60, in all honesty.

Hmmm....that is going to require some deal hunting.

The Enermax EG425P-VE SFMA 2.0 might be close though or if you can find the Xclio 480BL.

Is Xclio really a good brand? I haven't heard much about them.

Yeah they are ChannelWell products an OEM that made a name to most people in the states because most Antec supplies are made by them.
