ok so i have a amd64 dual core 3800+ with a nvidia 8800gtx in the PCIe slot running fedora 10. what can i do to get the most out of this machine points wise? ive been reading and everyone is talking about some good ppd #s out of this type of setup but i cant figure out what i need to do to get there. Any prod in the right direction would be appreciated.

and I'm not sure about linux GPU2 if there is one or not, but you could always try wine if nothing else, but I've heard that lowers your scores

For reference, in windows, I get 4700 PPD out of my 8800GTX
 
You can run the Linux SMP client and then run the GPU client in Wine as already suggested, but that is an involved process. I could also imagine running the GPU client in VMware with a Win XP/Vista guest, but I have never seen anyone post about such a combination since most are running the opposite like me. Start with the SMP client and if you wish to run the GPU client someone can help you out further with it. I don't know about using Wine for windows emulation, but I do know VMware and maybe I can help you there. Are you committed to keeping Linux installed on this computer, BTW?
 
I don't believe you can run the GPU2 client inside an instance of VMWare. This is due to the fact that it does not use nVidia or ATI drivers, but generic VGA drivers. In native Linux, you'll need to use WINE to get the GPU2 client up and running.

The SMP client in native linux should be easy enough to set up. Google finstall and it'll get you up and running in no time at all :D
 
Finstall the Linux client.
Just make sure you add the SMP flag when you start the Finstall sequence otherwise you'll download the standard client.

Readup about running the GPU client under Wine Here.

i guess not...everything i do i can use windows or linux, i just prefer linux, but there is always cygwin.

The best option for you as already mentioned (assuming you want to retain your currrent OS) would be to run the SMP client through your native OS, and run the GPU client through WINE.

Also, a 64-bit OS is necessary for running the Linux SMP client.

Woah :eek: Finally a thread that uses my middle name (right next to "el cheapo" :rolleyes:)

On the cereal side I hate to see that GTX not use the F@H GPU2 client, but AFAIK there isn't a F@H Linux CPU2 client (maybe just before the next ice age though) ;)

So that leaves you with three cherses, one: you can reformat and install a version of windose to use the F@H GPU2 client (install either WinXP, WinXP64, Vista 32, Vista 64 or Win 7 beta 64bit or 32 bit, I think the beta goes for another few months) and run a vanilla F@H client in VMWare Linux, two: you could use Linux to do the GPU DCing thing (I've never tried it) and do a vanilla F@H client or three: you could just scratch the GTX and just do LinSMP on the dual core (use some type of 64 bit distro for LinSMP). I don't really know if you can LinSMP and run the GPU2 client (using WINE) all on a dual core Athlon 3800+ (where're you at master folder Xilikon :confused:)
