Confused - X800 XT PE

I always thought the PE was a direct competitor of the 6800 Ultra Extreme. I thought I read somewhere that the PE came out first, and Nvidia answered with the Ultra Extreme. If this is the case, why are all the ATi fans going nuts over the PE beating out a regular Ultra? Wouldn't that be expected? And if thats the case, the Ultra shouldn't be beating the PE in anything, yet it does.

Anyway, correct me if I'm wrong. From the looks of the threads here it seems most think the PE and regular Ultra are the competitors.

6800 UEE is a myth, the XT PE while short in quantity is not--I've gone through 2 PE's already.

Very hard as in you will likely not see many guys with a 6800 UEE. On the other hand lots of people have PE's AND the PE is in the same price point as the 6800 U, the UEE costs more.

Still, that doesn't say much. The card still exists, you can't rule it out. Its clocks are the same regardless of how many people have it. The 6800 UE is like 550 if you win, and you can find it for <700 on eBay. The PE I haven't found (was looking on newegg) but the XT's themselves are already over 600.

Are you implying the UE is easier to find than a PE? BTW if you really wanted a PE you could've gotten one for MSRP by now. I managed to get 2 and I still have the option of getting 20+ more if I wanted. Here's a hint: BB fullfilment.

myth? ive seen about 20 on ebay so far

search on ebay for a 6800 Ultra Extreme yeilds 0 items..

Nvidia 6800 Ultra Extreme additionally yeilds 0 items.

What's the MSRP of the PE?

I'm not implying anything... I've never seen the PE and the UE (aka the two top dogs) go up against each other. I am just confused because all the ATi fans are cheering everytime the x800 XT PE beats out the 6800 Ultra... Why shouldn't it? Its SUPPOSED to be a superior card, yet its not, if the 6800 U is beating it in half the tests I've seen (check Toms Hardware).

I'm not looking to start a flame war, I'm just trying to set things straight. I don't understand why people are surprised when the x800 XT PE beats the 6800 U. It would be like people thinking its a feat for the x800 Pro to beat out the 5900.

You have to check back every so often. I see a few a week during my checking. Point is, if you really want one, it can be had.

see when a person is a fan they never look at both sides, its like me I'm a Yankee's fan in the morning I check their stats out and only thiers, never pay attention to the other teams.

Why would you want to buy an Ultra extreme there really is no need for it, the Ultra does just fine against the Xt pe. There was no formal annoucement from nV that there will be an Ultra Extreme. they stated thats up to the board partners.

Thats just a quick cursory search for "x800 platinum". I'm sure a more refined search would turn up more results.

6800 Ultra extreme search string, nada, zip!

So like I said, the 6800 UE for all intents and purposes was a marketing tool. The PE doesn't fare much better but it is a lot more readily available than the 6800 UE. As I've said already, people that really wanted one have had many chances to get one if they tried.

nVidia wins b/c of the 6800 GT, its available everywhere at a decent price point. Thats where ATi failed. So even though some ATi fans like myself may cheer on the XT PE, those of us with common sense know that nVidia still wins because of the GT no matter what the benchmark results. Anyhow, like I told you earlier, the 6800UE is not in the same price range ($599 msrp vs $499) of the XT PE so I wouldn't consider them competitors.

I completely agree... I think the 6800 Ultra does extremely well against the x800 XT PE, and I give it even more credit because IMO the x800 XT PE is supposed to be the topdog of ATi yet its being compared to a lower-teired graphics card. I mean, they're all high end, but when you start paying over 500 bucks for a graphics card you should be getting what you paid for. The fact that the 6800U can hang with an x800 XT PE and then theres even ANOTHER step up from the regular Ultra is quite a feat for Nvidia.

I still think the x800 XT PE should be compared with the UE. The XT with the U. And the Pro with the GT. Yeah, it makes ATi lose horribly in each category, but the MSRPs are similar for the most part. For some reason I feel like ATi fans cheering the PE over the Ultra is just putting two different cards on the same playing field. If you really want to compare, the PE should be compared to the UE.

Again, the mere fact that the UE exists means that it still has to be compared when comparing the cards for all intents and purposes. The UE *IS* better than the PE, the PE *IS* the highest card you can buy from ATi, and the UE *IS* the highest card you can buy from Nvidia.

Who said the UE is better? It just wins the same benchmarks as the Ultra and pretty much loses the same ones as well.

take a trip to nvidia and tell me what sort of info they have about the UE

only thing you will find is some reviews of UE cards not a single word from nvidia themself about an UE card in there 6 series lineup

Well its clocked faster both in RAM (1200 I believe) and in GPU (450 I believe). Its a faster card. The 6800U is faring well against the XT PE, wouldn't it make sense for the UE to fare even better?

But lets just say the XT PE is better than the 6800 UE for all intents and purposes. You have the two top dogs, with ATi on the top. Where does that leave us? It leaves the x800 XT to fare against the Ultra and the x800 Pro to fare against the GT.

Sigh.

MFZ: Don't even try. They're willijg to spend so much moe time than you, it isjm't even funny. Yuo'll be beatn down in their eys...leave it at this. I think you've given a god showing, for what that;s worth. Any capable person wuill eb able to make up their own mind.

Capable? My rationalization makes more sense than the rationalization "XT PE is better than the 6800 Ultra therefore is should be compared to it."

Am I the only one whos brain hurts after reading that? ;)

Here is how it works. You have the 6800 GT which competes with the X800 Pro. Then you have ATI's X800 XT which does not have an nVidia equiv, unless they release something like a 6800 Ultra+GT/2 ... then you have the X800 XT PE which competes with the 6800 Ultra. Yes, the X800 XT PE also can compete with the alleged 6800 UE, but that does not mean that it was what it is designed to do. It is designed to be competition for the 6800 Ultra (look at pricing) and it happens to have enough performance to compete with the 6800 UE too.

on ebay, ive seen them listed at ultra's but the box itself says ultra extreme

why shouldn't the x800xtpe be compared to the 6800u? they have the same msrp so they are directly competing with eachother. the 6800uee is just another high-end option from nvidia that doesn't have a similarily priced card to compete with from ATI.
should they be compared to eachother? maybe if you were looking for the absolute best card you can buy regardless of price. otherwise you would probably be comparing cards in the same price range.

also-- you have said that the comparisons should be between x800pro/6800gt, x800xt/6800u, x800xtpe/6800uee. There is no agp version of the x800xt, i don't see how that is a vaild option.

plenty more too

anyway I'm off to bed. thanks for the lively discussion.
That's an XT PE, not an XT. X800 XTs are clocked at 500/1000 and XT PEs are clocked at 520/1120.

I don't see why they should be compared. The 6800UE is nothing more than an overclocked Ultra produced only by a handful of nvidia's partners. If one of ATI's partners created a card based on the X800 core with higher clocks than the XT PE, should it be compared to the ultra?

Please show us where you can find an UE for the same price as the XT PE. Similar performing video cards from competing companies are typically grouped according to their price.

I think the thread title describes your condition fairly well.

alright after reading some reviews it looks like sapphire has released an agp x800xt varient, guess i missed it (haven't been looking much in the vcard section recently :p). is anyone aware of the msrp?

Its not a myth, its just very hard to get.
There is no such thing as 6800UltraExtreme. Basically, a marketing ploys fr. Gainward,BFG and EVGA. Unless those Nvidia partners use Samsung 1.4ns(700MhzX2) or 1.2ns(800MhzX2) memory. All 6800U use 1.6ns and NV40 core(exept ASUS which use 2.0ns on some of theirs). Check this out: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=806727The only difference is its BIOS with 1.5 Volt.

The 6800 Ultra Extreme is real.

nVidia announced it awhile back. They made a simple press release on their site that selected partners would get first choice on supremely well binned chips that passed tests at 450mhz. They suggested retailers selling these "6800 Extreme Editions" to pair it with ram capable of running 1.2Ghz plus.

eVGA sells them.

You can aquire them from their site OR conversely if the one of the guys who wins the drawing each week sells his on Ebay.

As of October 1st, they've sold 90. So there is at least that many out there, plus the ones that Anandtech and other sites have for reviewing purposes. Sure its not sitting on the shelf at every Best Buy, but it is most certainly REAL.

Now, is it as available as an XT-PE? Probably not. Its also a 50mhz core overclock and 100mhz memory overclock, whereas the PE is 20 and 60, respectively.

I'd also imagine if you worked at a huge retailer who had contacts inside eVGA that you'd be able to snag one after months of emails and calls and begging.

That... is just a guess ;)

Why do you think that, and why do you think the ATi cards would "lose horribly"? You obviously have not done your home work.

Cards should be compared by MSRP, perioid. The 6800 Ultra Extreme is NOT an official card. Its an overclocked 6800 Ultra, sold only by 2 (?) OEM's. Its $50+ more than the XT/PE going by MSRP. Its not on NV's website, and if you look at the actual GPU, it says NV40.

Why this is so hard to grasp, I just done know.

In Atlantic Canada a few stores stocked a couple Ultra Extremes from BFG. Or else it was just a BFG Ultra with some bullshit marketing on the box aobut being "Extreme".

They were pretty expensive, so I glossed over them entirely. But they did look mighty impressive.
