I have seen people mention Windows 8 OEM and Retail versions. I do not understand how licensing works for them. I need a version which I can reinstall after buying a new ssd or a new motherboard or just after wiping my installation. Which version has transferable licenses?

Also, is Pro worth the extra money or is the core Windows 8 just fine?

OEM is tied to the hardware.
Retail is not.

Home Premium is fine for a home user.

Don't feel bad about being confused by Microsoft licensing. This is assuming you are going to buy a separate Windows license at retail. Licenses that come pre-installed on a PC are tied to that particular PC.

Microsoft has dropped the "Full Retail" version of Windows 8. Instead, Microsoft is selling "Upgrades" and OEM or "System Builder" editions. Upgrades obviously require a previous version of Windows. OEM or "System Builder" licenses do not. Both can be moved between machines you own, so long as you remove them from the prior machine. http://personaluselicense.windows.com/en-US/default.aspx

System Builder discs can be found pretty much everywhere that sells Windows products: http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Syste...UTF8&qid=1371339888&sr=8-1&keywords=Windows+8

If you can't identify a "Pro" feature that you need, or don't care about paying an additional fee to install Window Media Center, then likely the Standard version will be fine for you.

I hope this helps.
