Just a quick question for you guys. Your hard drive buying guide states:

All-Around, >200GB: Western Digital Caviar SE16, 7K SATA 250/400GB
...
Cons: Interface confusion. The 250GB SE16 drive ships with 3gbps transfer support, but lacks NCQ.

But this WD page(overview tab) says:

Key Features

Native Command Queuing (NCQ) Dynamically re-orders requests to enhance drive performance.

Which is it?

It's possible there has been an update to the drive since the sticky was put out.

Dadgummit, WD's stealth changes to feature sets without changing model names/numbers is getting annoying.

They did it with their FDB motor switch...the only way to tell an FDB equipped WD2500JB from an older ceramic bearing WD2500JB is to look at the top of the drive (silver for ceramic, black for FDB). They also did it with WD2000JB geometry...some of them have 3 80GB platters with 5 heads, while others have 66GB platters with six heads, once again with no change in model numbers.

I like Maxtor's model number scheme the best, followed by Samsung's, then Hitachi. Seagate and WD bring up the rear. WD only details capacity, buffer size, and interface, while Seagate only details capacity, form factor (like that's even relevant nowadays), and interface. Hitachi is the most complete, but by far the hardest to understand. Samsung tells you the geometry, while Maxtor tells you the family. WD's are quick and easy, but leave a lot of important info out.

I will update the sticky accordingly, thanks for catching it.

It may not help during a retail purchase, but if you can see the entire label a lot of manufacturers have details info hidden around the label. Firmware revision, head configuration, things like that. You just have to know where to look. One particular brand has info stamped on the bottom of the casing.

K, I just noticed something else on the WD page:

16 MB cache and 1.5 Gb/s data transfer rate

So it's not SATA-II?

It says that after you click SATA 300MB/sec on their Desktop Drives front end.

That page is wrong (look at the title of it). It's the readout for the WD4000xx drives. Also, the correct info is listed on the specifications tab, although I can't hard link to it.

Ok, so I got a WD2500KS, and looks like no NCQ:

Maybe just a driver/NForce4 SATA problem?

Edit: Just checked the WD page linked above. NCQ is no longer listed. Bastages.
