Confused About My CPU

OK - I was curious what exact CPU came with my Dell Optiplex GX620 system. According to the , it uses a Intel Pentium D with Dual Core Technology. I was really suprised to see this is a Dual Core CPU...am I confused because what would then be the difference between what I have and the new Intel Core 2 Duo. I thought the Dual Core Duo was Intel's only "dual core" CPU.

Is the above just a fancy way of using the old Hyper Threading tech?

Pentium D's were Intel's first desktop dual core processor. You do indeed have two cores. Also the P-D's don't have hyperthreading.

d uses netburst and it runs hotter.
duo core 2 runs at lower frequancy and does more in a clock.

Core 2 Duo is faster and more efficient. Uses less power (supposedly) has SSE4, Virualization, and is not NetBurst.

Dumb question - is my "D" CPU 64 bit or 32 only?

The D's should be 64bit compatible as well. The other main difference, aside from being a totally new design, is that the Pentium D's have L2 cache for each processor...as in 1 MB for each core for a total of 2 MB...or so. The Core2Duo's have one larger L2 cache that's shared by both cores...for example, my 6600 has a 4 MB L2 cache, that either core can use.

I had no idea my Intel D was a 64 bit CPU....
