Confused about M2 NVME and MSI Z170A Gaming M7

Hi there,

So I'm doing my first new build in something like 10 years. Yikes where have the years gone?

I just ordered the MSI Z170A Gaming G7 and was now looking at SSD's.

I'm looking at the Samsung 950 PRO 512 GB NVM Express.

SAMSUNG 950 PRO M.2 512GB PCI-Express 3.0 x4 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-V5P512BW - Newegg.com

I noticed in the reviews someone mentioned make sure your board supports NVME.

So I found the manual online and it says this:
●2x M.2 slots
▶▶Supports PCIe 3.0 x4 and SATA 6Gb/s standards, 4.2cm/ 6cm/ 8cm length M.2 SSD cards
▶▶Supports PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe Mini-SAS SSD with Turbo U.2 Host Card**

That sounds to me like if I bought an SSD card that uses NVME that I would need to buy this Turbo U.2 Card.

Random note: The board itself boasts 32 Gb/s Turbo M2.

I've seen builds out there using this SSD with this Motherboard so I'm hoping it does support nvme out of the box... or do I need to buy this card:

MSI Model Turbo U.2 Host Card Accessory - Motherboard - Newegg.com

Or are those builds working but at a lower speed?

Anyone know if an nvme SSD will work properly with the MSI Z170A Gaming G7?

Much thanks!
Eric

Thanks emmjaws! Appreciate the quick response.

Sounds like I'm good to go to order this puppy.

I guess I was confused that the only mention of nvme also indicated using the U.2 connector.

Sounds like M2 that is PCIe 3.0 x4 is always NVME and will support 32 Gb/s?

No worries, i built a system earlier this year and it took me a long time to get my head around all the new stuff. Also correct on the speed with the caveat that it's a newer motherboard - some of the older boards/chipsets are limited in the speed they can achieve but for Z170 you don't have to worry about that.
