confused about card specs..

i was just comparing my current card (geforce fx 5950 ultra) to the card i want to get (6800 GT). i noticed that the core clock speed of the 5950 was 475mhz, while the core clock speed of the 6800GT was 350mhz. now, i know the 6800GT is much better, so why is the clock speed less?
 
Clock speed is really only one part of determining the speed of a component. You also have to look at there IPC (instructions per clock) or how much work they get done per each clock cycle. For instance an Athlon 64 3200+ (2.0Ghz) is about equal to a 3.2ghz P4 in performance even though it's 1.2ghz "slower". This is because it does more work per cycle than the p4. The 5950 and the 6800 are the same way.
 
Because the architectures are very different. The 5950 only has 4 pipelines which behave like 8 pipelines in some situations. The 6800GT is a full blown 16 pipeline part with a much more efficient architecture. So the amount of work per clock is much higher.

Think of a 5950 as a 8 lane highway with a speed limit of 475 and lots of traffic lights and the 6800GT as a 16 lane highway with a speed limit of 350 and no lights.
