HardOCP recently reviewed how a few setups performed in BF3. You can find the link as a sticky/announcement on the front page, or at the bottom of this post.
They compared the 580 to the 6970, both in single and dual GPU modes, and found the following in 1920x1200 resolution with ultra settings (given as average frames per second):
Single GPU
580: 50 FPS
6970: 41 FPS
SLI/CFx
580 SLI: 90 FPS
6970 CFx: 79 FPS
Notice the clear advantage going to nvidia here.
Now, toms hardware put out a similar review, and here are their findings for the same cards at the same resolutions (probably with different settings):
Single GPU
580: 69 FPS
6970: 70 FPS
SLI/CFx
580 SLI: 117 FPS
6970 CFx: 128 FPS
Now, I realize that with different game settings you'll get different results, but I don't see how the 580 would go from such a clear lead to a deficit (especially in the multiGPU catagory).
If their (toms) review of the 580/6970 is wrong, I'm guessing their other results (Which show an across-the-board victory for ATI cards) should also be questioned.
