Hi guys,

I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out a solution to my trouble regarding bandwidth allocation for each port on my Actiontec MI424WR router. I have Frontier FIOs 25mb/s service and have completed several speed test verifying that I am indeed receiving the full bandwidth advertised with my service.

Herein lies the trouble though. I typically use one primary device at a time when downloading files (i.e. games, movies, ect.). The problem is that this particular router has a hardware QoS system allocating for 8 input and 8 output channels at once. This effective turns my 25mb/s download speed into approx 3mb/s to each device. As I said, since I only use one device for major downloads it is quite annoying to have the bandwidth to my actual device be confined to approx. 1/8 of my full download speed (3mb/s).

I have attempted to manipulate the QoS settings multiple times assigning higher priority for my one device but nothing has worked to allow higher download speeds directly to one device alone. No matter what I do, I am confined to 3mb/s download speeds. It's kind of infuriating. I have attempted to contact CS with my FIOS service about obtaining product literature but it is apparently that they are profoundly clueless in the matter and cannot provide assistance.

Do any of you fine folks have suggestions?
 
Disable/turn off the QoS?

Swap the actiontec router out for something else, although if this is one of those ISP supplied thingummybobs to give you fibre or whatever, then this may be a little more difficult.

Is there any way to 'bond' the outputs together then shove them into a managed switch with a trunk configured for those 8 ports?
 
Yep, that's my dilemma. Unfortunately, it is a modem with the router built in. I cant' seem to figure out a way to turn off the QoS or funnel the channels independently. I was hoping that a more advanced user than myself with FIOS may have figured out a way around this problem.
 
Theres how-to's all over the interwebs about how to swap out your Actiontek. If you have TV through FiOS then you will always need to keep it. But thats ok.

The first thing you want to do is call up support and get them to switch data over to cat5 on your ONT. I assume (as most installs are) that data is going through coax at the moment.

Once you get it switched over to cat5 you can use any router you want. But as I said you will need to keep the Actiontek and give it internet. The easiest way to do this is to just simply plug the WAN port into any router/switch port on your network. Alternatitively you could put it in bridge mode yada yada, but i just plugged in the WAN and forgot about it.

My setup at home before i switched over to cable card rendering the actiontek and coax useless:

ONT ---> pfsense ---> Switch ---> Actiontek ---> Set top boxes through coax/moca
