Configuring Backup Windows to Linux Stumping Me

So for the better part of May I have been trying to setup a live backup of important files stored on my laptop which is running Vista to a share in Linux (Ubuntu specifically). I have been attempting to use RSYNC through Cygwin on Windows through with no avail, attempting every tutorial google can provide. Is there anyone here who can walk me through this setup or give me some insight on what I am doing wrong?

I need to get this sorted out before I can consider my Ubuntu server an adequate replacement for WHS for my storage needs - 5TB Media Server, 1TB Assorted other files, backups, etc.
