WooHoo...! I just picked up my PNY 6800 GT from CompUSA a couple of hours ago...
I come home and install...(everything is great so far). I try the NALU demo and I have to say.. it looks awsome. I couldnt even run it on my older Asus 5900 Ultra graphic card. Then I run
rthdribl.exe and monitor the temps on my card. I saw that while running at full screen resolution with maximum "eye candy" turned on..

My video'card's temp hit 79 C. The driver shows that the core slow down is at 120 C. I recently sold my Vantec Spectrum PCI cooler and only have the reference video card cooler..cooling it. The ambien temperatures under no load are 39 C and under load about 52 C. Under no load the card runs at 56 C.. (like my old card did). Should I be concerned about the 79 C full load temperature...???
 
Sounds hot to me. Even though I have no experience with a 6800GT. My ATi X800 XT PE only hits 55C under load on stock cooling.
 
I could be wrong, but most 6800GT's get those temps and higher...

I have at BFG 6800nu, my idle temp is around 51C, ambient 37C. Under load the max temp I get running Far Cry for a couple hours is 76C, ambient around 50C. I have never been concerned with the temps, well I guess I have been concerned with the under load ambient because I don't want to messup the rest of my computer. Maybe I should be concerned? I don't know, I always thought those temps were good.
 
No. 79C is great for a GT. Mine goes into the 80s after a few hours of gaming and Idles at 60C.

What kind of case/cooling do you have. I have a stock Praetorian and it never gets warmer than that. Mind you that's in the summer in a room w/ 4 computers @ ~90' Fahrenheit (we don't use AC). So yes, if you ask me, that seems a little warm for this time of year, but maybe your in a warmer climate and don't use AC either...
 
my 6800GT-OC got to 89 celcius at 397/1.1... so I got rid of it because I know it wouldn't last too long at that temp...
 
My room temperature..is about 72 F or 22.2222222 C....

Anyone else have a PNY and can give me their experience..?

I have a Dell 8300, so it really has minimal cooling and ventalation, thats the main reason I am worried about my ambient load temp of around 50C.
 
Well my first suggestion is that if you are worried about thermals, ditch the stock Dell case. While they may not have the worst cooling in the industry, I believe H-Paq earns that "honor", the large amount of plastic they use to build those things makes them very warm. Now having a Dell means you have a P4, not a bad thing as I'm kind of chip agnostic, and their thermals are higher than A64's under load.

Now that may be another point, the CPU may be contributing to your video card's thermals, if the case is not adequately moving air. This seems likely, I would suggest a Coolermaster or Lian-Li case as they are full aluminum. Coolermaster, IMHO, has won this round of cases due to better usability.

Just please stay away from those Thermaltake/Enlight/Antec/quasi-generic cases. People buy them because they "look cool" when they are not very impressive technologically. The non-aluminum TT's are bricks, and the aluminum ones are usually not worth the hand slicing hassles. Enlight makes "ok" mid-range cases but, if you put all the fans in them, they get pretty dang loud. The big Antec POS' that Alienware inspired everyone to buy have too much plastic, are often steel, and rather poorly constructed. My friend bought a Lian after his raptors warped the drive cage in one!

Choose wisely in all areas of computing, a good mobo/proc/et al. does nothing if the chassis is not conducive to thermal and structural concerns.

My ambiet temperature under full load is 52 C. Is that also too high...?
