Hi,

Are there any good deals out right now? Dell, emachines? Anything?

I need a new computer for a friend. Whats the best deal out right now?

well you have 3 options

1) Go out to your local Fry's and build one
2) Shop at Newegg and build one
3) Shop online and let me build it + ship it to you free of charge

I have some older friends who have been using email stations and want to go to upgrade to a cheap desktop...I recommended this deal...I couldn't even begin to buy the parts to build them a system for that amount of money. My first Dell was a P-200 w/64megs and a 3GB HDD for $2400....things sure have changed....:p

That may be true, but I think the question was dealing with a deal on a production machine, not everyone is a geek :p

If you go Dell, just make sure you upgrade on the vid card and sound card and get a decent amount of memory.

if u just want a cheap computer get an emachines. its pretty hard to beat their prices.

Ugh...not to go agianst the grain or anything but if it's basic things you might want to get an iMac or something like that. I know people that still have the original 233mhz iMacs and couldn't be happier.
The eMac, but you're really going to want to upgrade the memory with some Crucial instead of letting Apple add it.
Try some Mac shops around town you could probably get an older one for $500 or so. But for a PC I would say build your own, most if not all low end PCs are POS and hard to deal with upgrade wise. I think Dell's lowend is $799 right now they have a rebate too.
--Edit---
I just checked, Dell's lowend is $499. Pretty crappy specs though.

The iMacs aren't great for upgrades either. I think a dell is a good suggestion actually if you're looking for a PC, a system for under $500 new with a new monitor is a killer deal and they advertise all sorts of things. You actually have to sometimes look at different sources to really get a handle on what their sales are.

THe eMachines have also gotten much better. For general use either would be fine, even with the basic video and sound, however more RAM may be good down the road. 128 is a bit skimpy these days.

Actually - I must disagree. You can get some insane deals on the lower end dells. The "better" dells are rip offs however. Watch the hot deals section and you'll see some insane deals for some Dells occasionally.

Don't get me wrong though - I HATE Dell. I would never buy a Dell desktop computer. But then again I never buy low end systems.

Did I just see a recommendation for eMachines on this forum?!? Oh no, by God, you didn't just say that...

Vbp, build it yourself, or have someone do it for you. It's as easy as playing with Legos, and you'll get something much better than what Dell/HP/whoever would build for you. Parts come with warranties from their makers, and these forums will give you all the tech support you'll need.

Get an Antec Sonata w/ 380 TruePower PSU for $75 from BestBuy.
Get an A35N Ultra and a 2500+ Barton from NewEgg for $65 and $85, respectively.
Get 2 x 256mb of pc3500 Samsung memory from here for $88.
Get a combined 48x24x48x + 16x CD-RW/DVD drive from here for $43.
Get a graphics card to suit your needs. Might cost you $70-150.
Get your choice of keyboard and mouse, and speakers. These might come to $50, if you shop around.

Overclock the mess out of the processor and graphics card ("how-to" tutorials are all over the web). Get that 2500+ up to 2.4GHz, which would then outperform almost every high-dollar processor out there. Have a high-performing system for 75+85+65+88+43+120+50 = $526. Enjoy it thoroughly.

You can get a keyboard and an optical mouse for under $30, just don't look for the fancy stuff.

I must be tired...it took me like 2 minutes to figure out what you meant by "chubby billfold.":p

For a starter system on a budget or laptops, Dells are usually ok (Did I just say that?)

But I always greatly condone asking your gaming buddies or even co-workers about local shops filled with computer geeks who know how to put together a good rig for a reasonable price.

BTW: I'm testing out a one day old forum to soak up all the Dell questions. Most sites get a little tired of the same "where is the AGP slot" in my Dell & a lot of enthusiast sites like [H] I'm sure rolls their eyes when they hear someone (complaining) about a Dell.

The questions to ask yourself is how tech savvy is your friend and do you want to get lumbered with tech support.

If the answers to both questions is no then get a Dell.

Luck.........:D

I'd prefer to build my own desktop personally, but I've had an awesome experience with my dell laptop and would buy another when the time comes. However my next laptop will be more along the lines of a near ultra portable probably. Not the tiniest laptops because they aren't too gutsy but the next step up.

edit: but back to the topic at hand, I'd say for this guys needs a dell is the best way to go probably

Better yes, cheaper, no.

actually on the lowend dell does have good deals. Look for sites that have deals on techs or dells refurb site and you can see some crazy stuff. Putting together computers IS like playing with legos...but making a system run WELL is a totally differnt thing.

I would say go with build it your self comptuer but you might also wanna check out CompUSA and places like that...You can sometimes find good deals on systems...

For the money yes but at my old job those Dells were just a headache. Of all the computers the iMacs gave me the least amount of troubles, Hell several times the Dells refused to work and most didn't even see the CD drives and that's after Dell "fixed" them. When I firsted started I was amazed at how much troubles they had with their Dell lab, one of the other tech guys got tired of messing with it so he installed Suse Linux and then the problems went away. Those Dells where all brand new, I just thought it was a problem with Windows2KPro until I was asked to fix one of the teachers Laptops. Had to call Dell and they made it sound like the problem was my fault, turned out the HD was bad, even then it was like pulling teeth. I personally won't buy from Dell because I can put a PC together and config her all in my sleep. Then agian that was just a year a half ago, I guess things could have gotten better but I didn't stay long at that job because I wasn't getting paid overtime to fix those PCs, they where just a nightmare. I hope other people have had better experiences with Dell then I had, I worked for a school district I would hate to see how they treat normal users though. For friends and family I build them a PC or offer to help them get an iMac because of how well they ran. Don't belive me? Read this article.
