Ok....as noted by a post in this forum asking help for a new box...i lost my computer recently in a lightning storm thinking things were burnt out ...when i atually examined discovered potentillay less damage (still bought new computer anyay though :)...now i am trying to trouble shoot it out cus it is acting funny...some help would be appreciated if anyone has similar expreience.

Computer was running fine (relative for this computer as it was always acting weird...ROM drives dissappear, harddrives dissconnected...not often...but it happenned) but then one evening i was moving IDE connectors around inside (lost controller card so now six drives ahred two IDE ports)...

anyways...after switching drives around and restarting computer started acting real weird...would lock up and not move needing hard reboot..sometimes when it rebooted it woldsimply not restart...from here on computer hasnt worked properly...i have gotten vriable amounts of productivity from it..butnone consistent...

computer would get to windows start screen...lock up...sometimes to desktop and lockup...and sometimes it wouldnt even get to the windows screens and still be going through mobo diagnostic screens and the such...

now it does something new....when i power it one...the cpu/case/psu fans all spin up and start running as if moving properly along...(nothing is attached to board at this point, no HD, ROMS - but there is an ATI 9100 or so in the AGP slot)...but ten tey shut off after about ten seconds...this happens exactly the same with two seperate power supplies...

i am wondering if this is mobo memory or cpu...if it is mobo/memory...i can get a new microatx board and a single 512 chip and boom...server...if i can save 80$ i would be happy hwoever...anyone got ideas...thanks

ASUS p4-533c
P4 2.4 533FSB
512 MB RDRAM 2x256
PSU ANTEC trueblue470 and an older enermex 365

I had a problem similiar to this. In my experience it was either my PSU, or not having a CPU fan plugged into the mobo. I know on my Nforce board if there is no fan plugged into the mobo, the computer will start to boot, then stop.

my friend just got his back from the local pc shop after having exactly the same lock up problems. faulty cpu was the verdict.

PSu had been testedwith two seperate ones so far...one is the one attached and second was older one that could potentially be buggy...when i get new PSU for other computer tomorrow/friday i will test there...

if it is CPU i will be annoyed most...cus i dont mind buying a new50 mobo/50ram chpand turning this into a server (in fact i would like too)...if the PC shop said it was a fauly CPU...i wouldnt believe them just cus it i a PC shop...

All fans were plugged in properly...cpu fan always plugged it, in fact cpu fan spins up and is one of the fans that moves properly...

I have since broken the computer down to CPU/HSF/PSU/Case connector cables....nothing else

i press power...cpu/psu fan pins up (slowly..but they are temperature associated and the heatsink is a swiftech)...goes about 4-5 seconds...light is PSU shuts off (blue led) at same time cpu fan spins off...nothing attached...even removed ram/video

i dont have a speaker in either of my cases (kindaparanoid about magnet in them) so i cant really diagnose much...ill search if mobo wll output through onboard sound into speakers...
