computer working hard periodically

Hi, I've got a new computer running Vista Ultimate 64 bit and I noticed that periodically the computer will work hard even though I'm not doing anything on it, just browsing the web. It even makes noise when it does this, it doesn't do this all the time. Is this normal? thanks
