hey guys,

i tried searching for this but had trouble so hopefully you guys can help...

i came back from a 2 week vacation and when i hit the power button on my rig it came on for a second and then died.

i just assembled this computer a few months ago:
DFI Lanparty SLI-DR
Enermax 535W-SLI
2x hitachi 80gig SATAII in RAID0
BFG 7800GTX
Audigy 2ZS Platinum
1 gig OCZ Platinum EL

i tested the switch with the onboard friendly power switch so i don't think it was the switch. i'm not sure how to test the power supply but i'm getting a sinking feeling the power supply died.

i think i read a post on computing.net of a similar problem someone returning from vacation to a completely dead system.

thanks

funny but i don't see how it solves my problem

i tried a power cycle (whether that's appropriate or not i have no idea) but didn't work.

i'm just trying to find some advice since i don't have access to a spare psu

have you tried reseating everything? cables, memory, clear cmos? if there is a switch on the back of the psu its in the on position? no surge protector tripped?

yes i'm trying but i'm curious how they would be disturbed after a 3 week vacation...sigh

maybe it was the surge protector when i was gone even though the computer was off.

Sorry, just couldn't resist.

If the system isn't powering on in the least, check the simple stuff first. Is the surge protector/whatever the PSU is plugged into fuctioning correctly? Can anything on the same strip get power? Is the switch on the back of the PSU thrown the right way (the I should be depressed). Finally, you could always unplug the PSU from the mobo and try this trick to power the PSU. If that works, then there might be other issues. If it doesn't, the PSU is definitely at fault.

Reset CMOS, as stated above if you haven't already. Do you have any parts to swap to look for faulty devices?

Try testing the power supply by using a paper clip. Put the paper clip in the motherboard connector from the green wire to any black (ground) wire on the connector. Turn the power on to the psu, and see what happens.

The psu should power up and function normally. If this is not the case, be 100% certain you didn't make a common sense mistake (ie the switch on the back of the psu is turned off [set to circle]) before declaring the psu garbage.

FU! good timing :)

ok so i've already tried clearing the CMOS, the surge protector is not broken, i did not turn off the PSU switch, i've even switched power cables before i posted, but none of this simple stuff worked.

i'm working on a paper, but when i get home i'll definitely try the paper clip thing-otherwise i was going to steal a multimeter and play with it ...somehow

thanks for the response i'll update later tonight

i tried the paperclip trick and i think the PSU is dead the fans didn't turn on...i've had it working fine for less than 6 months and i come back from vacation and it dies??

i hope enermax has good RMA
