Computer won't start

Hey Guys,

I build a new computer for my friend, and i built it all, and it worked fine. He took it home, and it stil worked, but the next day when he woke up, it wouldn't turn on. The fans would turn a bit, then shut off, the computer would not even post.

I went to his house today to check it out. I unplugged everything except the motherboard. Same thing. I then unplugged the motherbaord and plugged the fans back in, and using a paperclip started to power supply up, and the fan still ran. This basically gave me two conclusions

1) The power supply isn't supplying enough amps to start the motherboard.
2) The motherboard is shorting out somehow.

On the reviews (on newegg) for the case, the power supply had gotten VERY bad reviews, we bought it mostly because it was cheap. My friend said he didn't want to spend more for a new power supply unless he had to, so we tried it out. Now i am planning on getting a Antec 380 Watt power supply, because i think thats the problem with his system. Do you think this will fix the problem, or should i try to see if the motherboard is causing the problem?

#1 rule of computer building: don't skimp on your power supply.

Sounded cheaper at first didn't it? But now he's spending more overall. Lesson learned.

Also make sure that you installed the rubber screw fittings for the mobo to prevent shorts.
 
Odd for it not to post with just the motherboard plugged in. It has to be a really bad PSU to not be able to do that... Sounds like somthing shorted out or fried. What I would do if your determined to save money is to take out the PSU from the case and put it into another computer to see if it will boot and if the rails are good. I would almost recommend keeping it in there for awhile to try to replay the situation. If it works in another computer I bet it has to do with your motherboard. Someone had a similar problem a few days ago with his abit board.
 
I guess i'll try to borrow another power supply to test if its working, its really wierd how it worked for 2 days then died tho :(
 
I bought a cd burner for my wife that died after writing 2 cds perfectly, sometimes it happens.

make sure the motherboard isn't touching the case somewhere and shorting it out... did you mount the motherboard properly? maybe one of the mounts broke or something. long shot, but meh. never hurts to check it out i guess.
 
hmm it did have wierd metal clips for the motherboard...it seemed like it was being shorted somewhere, but i thought it was in the power supply not on the motherboard.
