Hello everyone, my computer was giving me some problems so I decided to open it up and check it out. Well after I went to boot up again and the computer wouldn't start at all, no power. I picked up a new power supply and now the computer starts but nothing shows on the screen. I can hear and see everything starting up like hard drive, cd rom etc. Theres power to the video card but theres nothing on the screen at all. I restarted the cmos with the jumpers and removing the battery. The mobo is Asus K8n-E deluxe.

Is your memory in good condition and is it in the right slot? If it isn't in the right slot the monitor won't turn on.

I tried taking each of my 3 ram sticks in and out of the board. I notice that when I hit the power button and all the hard ware boots up, both cd rom lights keep flashing every 5 seconds or so.

Sorry I should of been more specific, I tried booting up varying the different sticks in and out of the pc but it still wouldn't start up

YOur pins in your memory slot could be bent. One of my friends had that problem and brought it to bestbuy and they found that he had bent pins in it.

So after you installed a new PSU it would boot just without video unlike before where it would do nothing?

If so my money is that the old PSU took something with it. (Assuming the old psu was bad)

any beep codes? try reseating the video card.......I almost replaced a mobo last week till I noticed I had dislodged the video card when I picked the comp up with out a side panel....course it was a cheap (flimsey) case.

Probably either a loose power connector (make sure both the 20/24 pin and 4 pin adapter are plugged in) or failing that you have a short. Take the motherboard out of the case and set it on a piece of cardboard, and try booting it there.

how do you start the comp out of the case? you need to short two wires? can someone please explain how.

You short the 2 pins where the power button jumper connected, you can do it by touching both of the pins with a screwdriver or something conductive. Only touch those two pins though.

bingo - its not the memory

i mean, bent pins? honestly, a memory slot doesnt even have pins.... knowing how many hacks work at best buy, im willing to bet they made that up and told your buddy that to get him to buy something new

are there any burn marks on the atx connector? when mine blew it had a burn on teh +5v line (ie, red wire) and it only too out my board. if it surged teh +12v you could be in more trouble - as the CPU and Video card draw off the 12v. if it did the 3.3v, it couldve taken the memory or PCI cards... and if it surged teh +5v it probably just too the board, and maybe corruped your hard drive. id get those other parts tested ASAP

what slot the memory is in doesnt make a lick of difference - if the memory is good, itll post no matter what. oh, and you can turn the monitor on without the computer... all teh computer does when it posts is sends the monitor a signal

Is your ram making your computer unstable?
if it was, the computer would have at lesat posted - his computer didnt start at all, inferring a busted PSU, especially since it started up when the new PSU was installed.

he was lied too. ever seen teh inside of a memory slot? those leads (they arent pins) arnet going anywhere.

actually, the position of the memory can make a huge difference assuming it is rambus, or in some rare cases i have noticed some motherboards that MUST have the memory in the first slot first, as in if you have 3 slots, the memory must be placed in slot one first, slot two second, ect.. also if you are running in dual channel mode, one stick must be on one channel and the other must be, obivously, on the other - oh and they have to be a matched pair.

tom, which one should i be shorting? PWR-SW or P-LED.

short the pwr-sw (switch)... no point shorting the power LED - you might even do some damage!

hes running an a64. hes not running rambus.

He's probably using that motherboard with socket 754, RDRAM, MCA bus, and optional math co-processor.

Oh wait, that wasn't very funny. Meh.
