computer wont start, cant figure out why

my computer was asleep for the last few days, and i just went to wake it up a minute ago and it wouldnt wake up. i have no idea why. i tried the power button instead, but my motherboard just made a little squeak and the cpu fan twitched, but that was it. any tried to turn it on after that gave no indication that i had tried. if i turn the psu off and back on, then try to turn the computer on again, then it does the squeak and the twitch. it seems like its some sort of power issue, maybe a bad power supply? also, its open bench right now, so no case which means something could have been damaged or some dust or something could have gotten on the solder point. its unlikely, but definitely possible. has anyone encountered this before or have any suggestions as to how i can troubleshoot the problem and find out what it is?
 
Check memory seating, that's the usual culprit. Otherwise, test in a logical fashion.

Take out all add-in cards and peripheral connections. Take out all the ram. Test with individual sticks of memory, perhaps one stick is bad. Double check CPU seating, although that's usually not a problem. If you have spare parts, test with components you know work (power supply, ram, CPU, video). If it's a open bench double check the motherboard and see if it's touching any exposed metal.
 
I would say to test the PSU first.

yeah i think its a psu problem. i disconnected the power cables to the 5870 and the computer started. i assume this means that im probably overloading the psu? im not sure why, as ive been running it with this same power supply for about 2 months now with no problems, and then it decided it wasnt enough during sleep mode? if i could get it to boot, i might be able to undervolt the cpu a bit and get it to work again, but not really sure. i might just have to move to a 6870 or a 460. :/ any other ideas for how i can get my power demand down?

also, ive gamed and such with these components, and the system has been stable. is it possible that it could not have enough power to boot even though just recently it could play batman AA at 2560x1600? i thought bootup takes way less power than gameplay...
 
also, if i do this psu calculator, i get that i should have a 350W or higher psu. obviously thats cutting it close, but with a 450W psu i thought i should be ok. does this psu actually perform under 450W, or could something have accidentally clocked up somehow and now it demands more power?
 
watts don't matter, the card need amps to run properly. That psu is under specced for that setup. If you check the minimum requirements for that 5850, you will see that you need a 500w minimum. Here are a few worthy of your consideration.

sorry, its actually a 5870. sig needs updating. 212W maximum for a 5870 and a 95W maximum cpu means that i am at around 307W for the two most power-hungry components. add in the (itx) motherboard and a laptop hdd, plus 2 sticks of ddr3, and i cant think im using over 350W or so. the psu is rated at 432W on the 12V rail, and jonnyguru didnt have any complaints about it not putting out its rated amount of power. i have about 100W to spare, assuming nothing is overclocked, putting me under 80% usage. mathematically, it doesnt really make any sense unless im dead wrong on something here.
