I posted this thread in the "motherboards" section, but as I don't really know if it's a mobo problem, I'm posting a copy here. Mods, go ahead and delete one or the other whichever one is more off topic.

Just purchased the Asus P4P800 Deluxe along with a P4 3.0Cghz HT compatible processor retail box

I attempted to replace my current mobo and processer with this combo, however, on power on, nothing happens, no beeps no power on self test, nothing...the instruction manual says that this means the POST failed, however after checking all the connections and jumpers I have no idea what caused this failure. Here are my current system specs:

MSI 845E MAX2 Motherboard (Intel 845E chipset, 533 MHZ FSB)
P4 2.53 ghz (no hyper or anything)
Gainward 128 MB Geforce 4 TI 4600 (AGP 4x)
2x 512MB DDR400 PC3200 RAM
Master Primary IDE: Western Digital 250GB 8mb cache HD
Slave Primary IDE: Western Digital 120GB 8mb cache HD
Master Secondary IDE: OptoRite DD0401 DVD+/- RW
Slave Secondary IDE: Random DVD-ROM
SB Audigy
Random LAN Card

As far as I can tell, all of this should be compatible with the new mainboard/processor. Is it necessary to upgrade mobo/processors on a new system? IE a formatted HD etc? I don't want to reformat, I just want to upgrade my motherboard and processor.

I am not using RAID or SATA or anything like that currently. I know all the other parts work as well since I'm typing with them right now (switched back to my old mobo/processor to get some tech support)

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

reseat the memory and the processor

make sure the +12v line is plugged into the motherboard

turn it on with only the memory, video card, and processor. See if you get any error beeps.

also make sure you plug in your speakers so you can hear the asus post report

12V line is plugged in. I reset cmos and tried it with only 1 memory stick, video card, processor, and primary hard drive. At first I thought it was working, because it actually turned on, and there were no beeps, but it froze when I hit delete to enter bios. Restarted, and tried again, same problem, but froze at a different screen. Next restart it was completely blank. Pulled everything out, reset cmos again, and tried it w/ the asus cables. Hooked up cd roms and both HDs (I thought it was hanging because it couldn't find all the devices or something), and I actually got into bios. However, it froze inside the bios, nothing worked. On restart, it went blank again. I also noticed that it beeped three times, and I think there was a longer beep before that, which apparently indicates video card memory error or something along those lines.

After that last one, I went back to single HD, reset cmos, and tried again, but it wouldn't work at all.

Are there any known issues w/ this card and a Gainward GeForce4 TI 4600? As far as I can tell, this should work...

I'm going to try calling ASUS tomorrow, and if not, maybe exchange the board for the ABIT one. At least I know the processor works, since it did detect the 3.0ghz processor.

Thanks in advance

To boot into windows you will probably need to reformat (WinXP won't let you boot if your hardware configuration has changed dramatically); however, that is NOT the reason why you are not able to POST.

Are your memory sticks in the correct banks? Is your motherboard even getting power? (Most motherboards have some LED of some sort inside...) Do you think you may have damaged your processor during installation (from static, incorrect installation, etc.)? Perhaps you just received a lemon.

If the above doesn't really help, maybe you should try your old mobo and CPU to see if you perhaps damaged your video card or memory.

I checked the instruction manual on memory stick placement, and as I am placing only 1 stick in, it says any bank would do, however the reccomended a particular bank which I used. The Motherboard is recieving power (LED is on, power button works, reset button works).

Also, old mobo and cpu work fine because that's what I'm typing on right now. When the new one didn't work I took it out and put all my old components in.

Is new mobo/cpu considered a dramatic change for winxp? I was hoping to avoid reformatting.

Thanks in advance

reseat the memory and the processor, what PSU do you have. Also check the jumper for CMOS reset. I know now they do not come on reset, but make sure it is on normal.

take the motherboard out of the case ... put it on the table .. hook up the powersuppy and video card and see if it posts.

i bet you left a motherboard riser in the wrong spot and you're shorting out your motherboard. if you don't want to buy a new board i suggest you do the above as soon as you read this.

make sure all the risers are in the correct spots -- not all motherboards have mounting holes in the same spots. it's not as simple as just unscrewing the old motherboard and screwing in the new one. placement of the risers is critical.

I had a similar problem when upgrading. Actually the same thing, and what I realized was that my Barton 2600+ was running @ 333mhz and my Mushkin pc3200 was running @ 400mhz, and it wouldn't go to the post test. So i returned my pc3200 for pc2700(333mhz) and boom.. fixed. I never would have thought of this, but... I heard several other people with the same problem, and this fixed it. I'd check the numbers for compatibility.

I tried it with the mobo out of the case, with 1 ram stick (pc3200 ddr400), the processor, and the vid card. It didn't even turn on...sometimes the monitor light would go stable green as if the computer was working, but still nothing showed up. Since the video card was working fine w/ my other mobo, I concluded it was the mobo or processor, and most likely the agp slot, so I'm gonna send them back to newegg for an exchange.

However, now a new problem. On the previous two times, after testing the mobo then putting my old one back in, I was able to restart my computer just fine, which is how I was posting. However, this time after putting it together, I have a new problem..

POST succeeds, gives the success beep and I can enter bios and change stuff or whatnot. However, everytime I start I end up at the windows boot menu (safe mode, normal, last known good config, etc), but no matter what I choose, the computer pretty much restarts instantly right after. I tried booting from a winxp cd, but after it loads up all the drivers, as soon as setup starts I get a blue screen error and I am forced to turn off the power and turn it back on.

I have no idea what is wrong...all the components are the same, in the same places, and POST is succeeding...any suggestions would be helpful...I need to get this thing running, I have a paper due thursday...and I can't use my roomate's comp for that long

Thanks in advance,
Kevin
