Computer won't recognize external HD

I did a search on this problem, but I couldn't find anyone with my specific problem. Here's the deal... A while back I picked up a hard drive + external enclosure (called Smart-drive, using Firewire and USB2). I attached it to my desktop and did the usual formatting thing. Everything was fine, so I went ahead and started backing up some files. Once I was done, I unplugged it, and this is where things started to get messy.

The next time I plug it in, the desktop doesn't detect it. After replugging it and resetting the power a few times, it finally shows up, and everything works again. It sucks, but I can always get it to detect it after a bit of wrestling. But here's my main problem: my laptop (which is newer than my desktop, but they're both running XP) refuses to recognize it in My Computer. I've tried different cables, and resetting it numerous times. My laptop sees it in Device Manager and Disk Management (all the stats are there and it shows up healthy), but I can't get it to show up in My Computer.

Unfortunately, reformatting is not an option since I have a ton of data on there that I want to keep. Anyone have any ideas?
 
try this...

Go to Device Manager and Disk Management then right click the drive in the table.
Click on "Change Drive Letter and Paths" in the menu.
Click the add button.
and try to Assign it a drive letter.


It worked for me a few times.
 
You gotta be kidding me... it worked! I can't believe it was that simple.

It didn't appear when I went through Device Manager, but it was available through Computer Management. Thanks KoZLop!
