Okay guys,

Having a bit of trouble with my rig. A couple of weeks ago I was just playing some games and then shut down my computer. In the morning I went to boot it and all I got was the CPU fan running and then turning off again. After a bit of fiddling I went online and ordered a new case and power supply. I suspected something was wrong with my old generic 400W PSU and had planned on upgrading eventually, just not by force. Anyway, my case and PSU (680W generic) arrived 2 days ago and I didn't hesitate to put all of my components in the new case. All was well - The system started and then I got a notification onscreen that the backup BIOS chip was recovering the main chip. Funny, I didn't try to flash my motherboard's BIOS before it failed. I had no problems. So not complaining, I let it all set up and within a few minutes I had my computer back.

After a few hours of gaming and web browsing, Windows closed all of my programs, flashed the 'Windows is shutting down' screen for half a second and shut off. In the space of about 3 seconds. Thinking that was strange, I turned my computer back on again and It all started up fine, until "Windows is Starting" where it just shut off again. I then started it again and ran the BIOS setup, where it reported that my CPU was reaching temps of 127degrees Celcius. I freaked out and shut everything off. I instantly opened everything back up after unplugging the power supply and waiting a few seconds. I removed the heatsink at touched the CPU, it certainly wasn't 127degrees. It was closer to 50, by my touch. So I then reattached my cooler (Intel stock) and started my computer.

I got back into Windows again and then it just shut off. After restarting, I was faced with another backup BIOS recovery screen. When my computer started again, I just turned it off and went to bed, sick and tired of it for the day.

The next day I was playing Call of Duty 4 (Which is quite stressful for my rig, but it handles it nicely) for 20 minutes or so and then paused it. I came back about 10 minutes later to find my computer off. When I press the power button, the computer started for a bit and then shut off before POSTing. It would then do it agin without any input, before stopping and sitting there, doing nothing. I then bread boarded the bitch and laid it all out, just the basic components (CPU, RAM, MoBo, Power supply) and everytime I fick the on switch on the power supply, the computer starts and shuts off before post twice, before not reponding to anything, requiring an unplug to start again.

I have tried both power supplies on the setup today, and got the same results. I have tested both power supplies by shorting the green pin to a black one. No problems with either of them. What is wrong? Any suggestions? What parts are to blame here?

My Rig:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @3Ghz (no overclock, bought a used part)
2GB single stick OCZ Gold Series DDR3 PC36400 (no overclock)
Gigabyte GA-G41MT-ES2L
Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD4350 (Overclocked)
Seagate 160GB IDE HDD (Used part, though working fine)

My power supplies:
400W Generic
680W Generic

Parts in warranty:
RAM, MoBo (maybe :S) and graphics card.

Help me people, please.

First, you are playing with fire using a generic PSU. Get a Corsair or an Antec in the 500w range.

Second, did you clean your cpu and reapply thermal paste when you reattached the heatsink? It sounds like your heatsink is not properly seated and the cpu is overheating causing the pc to shut down.

Okay, I may have to do that whenever I get money.

Ummm, about thermal paste. I have never used it because I get decent temps without it. Though I am aware it is highly recommended.

It is not recommended, it is Necessary! This is your problem.

Get some AS5 or similar, lookup on youtube how to apply and your problems will be solved.

But without any thermal paste I get temps of around 45C idle and 80-90 on load.
Okay, I think I'll go and get some before I try anything else, thanks!
But wait, can the CPU really overheat within a few seconds?

Okay okay, thermal paste it is. After I get some I will post back, thank you.
