Computer won't go into OS.

Friend is having real trouble with his rig. It keeps having random problems, help the man out please.

Computer POSTS, system fine beep. Then a fatal error beep happens during OS select screen and everything stops spinning.

System specs-
Gigabyte 915p GA8I915P Duo Pro A
3.0 GHZ LGA775
Gigabyte PCI-X 5900
Samsung SATA 160GB

What should we try? Thanks.

Do you get an Error Screen?
How many Beeps (I ask because these actually mean something)?
What OS?
Also why does he have an OS select screen (more than 1 OS i know..but why?)

If he has Two OS's unhook one of the HD's and boot it up and let the other load. If it loads then do the same for the other, and if that locks up, then your prob is the HD itself. If both fail..then, there is a problem elsewhere.

But I personally need more info to understand the problem. Sorry :(

What OS? Windows 2000

***He has just informed me that one long continious beep also means DRAM error so he is reseating that now. It has booted into OS before, and has been used for a good while too.*** Update soon, thanks in advance.
 
Could the RAM suddenly go bad? It still won't boot. Tomorow we are going to cross reference parts.
 
Sounds like a hardware problem for sure. I would rule out the mobo, cpu, and hard drive. Try a different PSU and memory. Also, disconnect all other devices except for vid card, HD, and one stick of memory.
 
Checked everything out, It was the proccesor. The HSF wasn't secure, CPU was running at 95* (Hot even for LGA :D ). Fixed that. However the SATA drive is being assy. XP didn't want to install on it, so I tried to format it as a slave to my IDE but It didn't show up. He will probably end up returning it for a nice 'ol IDE drive :)

95% of the time you need to pop in a driver disk impediately upon the startup of the windows install program. Press F6 when you see the prompt and pop in the disk and it should be able to install onto the sata drive.

well it looks like he "needs one." Yu can get a used one in the bargain bin at your local hardware store for like 3-5 dollars.

true.. I have mine sitting on a shelf - for emergency situaltion..
 
Or Just Slipstream the SATA drivers into your win XP CD. I allways keep a uptodate copy of Win XP W my raid drivers slipstreamed in to it.

XPCREATE can do some drivers other are a little harder to do, however while your at it slipstream SP2 and hot fixes into your win XP cd.
