I'm having an issue with my computer. I have a XFX 9800GT card and for some reason when I have the card installed the computer won't boot. I see the power light come on but it doesn't do anything; no fans, no harddrive access, not a sound. As soon as I pull the card it powers up just fine.

I just got the card replaced through XFX and it was running fine with no apparent problems for about a day then I wake up this morning and it's the same problem. I didn't get a chance to test any games so I don't really know if it was working to begin with but it's experiencing the exact same problem as the first card.

I'm going to send it back and hope it's just a bad card but could it be something else? Any advice would be appreciated.

My computer for reference:
- Windows 7 Professional x64
- Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700
- Intel DG33TL Motherboard
- CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 TWIN2X4096-6400C5
- Antec EA500 500W Continuous Power ATX12V v2.0
- 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB 7200 RPM
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB 7200 RPM
- ATI TV Wonder 650 PCI TV Tuner
- LITE-ON 16X DVD±R DVD Burner With LightScribe

Your PSU/power connections or the card being faulty are my first suspects.
Unplug the card, carefully clean its connections, blow dust out of the PCI-E socket etc...

Failing that, check the card in another PC that has a powerful enough PSU.
And/or try another PSU that is powerful enough to run the card.

Check CPU and motherboard temps without the gfx card plugged in.
Measure the voltages coming from the PSU as well.

Thanks for the advice. I haven't tried the video card in my other PC yet so I'm not 100% sure if the video card is dead yet. If it's the PSU, I'll be able to take one from my other PC that's more powerful.

Thanks again.

If you tried the above you might also try it in another PCIe slot. Some boards are weird like that.

Unfortunately my board is a cheapy Intel with a single PCIe slot.

Just tried the video card in my old computer that has a 700W PSU. Same results, the front case power light comes on but nothing is booting and there are no sounds of the hard drive. Looks to be a faulty video card.

Bad luck I guess, I was hoping to play some Half Life: Source over the Labor Day weekend. :(

Thanks again for the help.
