Computer will not start

my computer decided to turn itself off today when i was at work after being up for almost a month, and now I can't get it to start up again. It's a a64 2800 on an asus k8ne with a gig of kingston hyperx with a 550w ryanpower power supply. When i hit the power button, it starts up like normal, but after like a second it turns off, and it's making a quiet whining noise when it's plugged in.

any ideas? did my month old power supply die?

You should buy a reputable brand's PSU from now on. (I.E. Antec, Forton, Enermax, PCP&C...) It is quite odd how it turns on for a few seconds and then powers down though, maybe it's an overheating problem? Heatsink seated properly? Do you have a spare PSU you could try out on the system?

I was under the impression that these were good psu's.

And I thought it might be an HSF issue at first, but PSU's dont whine when the HSF isn't seated correctly.

Maybe you just got a dud man, they aren't on the list of "do not buy" PSU's at least.
