hey guys!

turned on my main computer this morning after a week or so of it being off, and got nothing. the psu turns on, the fans spin, the hdds spin, the cd drives will not operate.

in the past when i have seen this i get an alarm/beep/chirp from the system speaker letting my know of a problem - here i get no such indication. i reseated the processor and fan, removed ram, video card etc. unfortunately i do not have a similar system to swap parts with.

what does this sound like to you guys?

I would say,

would try removing all hardware excluding the minimun, CPU Board PSU, and ram, if you still get no beep than, you will need some part to try the next 3

PSU, or board, or CPU, can cause no beep if they're dead,
 
So when you removed all RAM, you got no error beeps?
And when you removed your vidcard, you still got no error beeps?
Does the system stay on for longer than a few seconds?
Did you reset/clear your CMOS?
Did you try setting it all up outside of the case?
 
when the mobo was still in the case i tried it with
no ram - no beeps
no video card - no beeps
system will stay on until i power it down
yes, have cleared the cmos via the directions

the mobo, vid card, ram, psu is now on cardboard outside the case. the internal speaker is not hooked up at the moment as it is attached to the case.. ill see if i can get it detached.

edit, just tried it out of case with the speaker, no beeps chirps or alarms still! i don't know how to read my voltmeter exactly but the data i get on the analog scale is the same as on i get on my other computer. thinking that means my psu is alright?!

If your CD/DVD drive doesn't open, I'd say its your PSU. I had a similar problem when I first built one of my machines and the DVD drive wouldn't open either. It turned out to be a DOA psu.

ok well the CD drives did not turn on, but all the fans are on, the HDD are spinning, etc etc. again voltages shown on the analog voltmeter are the same as shown on my other computer.
 
the only way to be sure, is to try it with a power supply you know that's good, if you still get no beep.... than it's goiing to be Board or CPU...
 
well i just tried my other psu which is only a 20pin vs a 24pin socket. i only tried it without the core2, vid and ram. i had the speaker attached. no sound. i think it's the mobo.. any more thoughts before i buy?
 
The way I tested my PSU with an older 20pin unit was just hook the CD/DVD drive up to it and see if it opens, if it does then apparently something is wrong with the new PSU.
 
good idea! just tried that.
if i just plug in the molex to the CD drive it turns on and i can open it instantly.
if i plug in the molex and the ide cable from the mobo to the CD drive it wont turn on.

still no audible indications of an error.
